I am wondering if anyone has any pictures or knows of any links to the web concerning the Milwaukee Road lines west immediately before or after the abandonment. Does anyone know of any pictures showing the salvage operations? I would greatly appreciate it!

The Milwaukee Road Historical Association has a home page with links to several member sites and I believe some of these may have shots of what you are seeking. I have lost a lot of my favorites in a HD upgrade and this seems to be one of them. Try MRHA.com or MRHA.org and see what comes up.
I’ve got a couple of recent (last year) pictures of the rails being removed from downtown Marion, IA, if you’re interested in those.
That would be interesting Brian, if you are willing. This is a topic that I have not been able to find much on, but I am sure that somebody took pictures of the lines as they were being removed in the early eighties.

Do you know when the last rail operations occurred on the tracks?
IIRC, the last MILW trains through here were in the '78/'79 timeframe- I know they ran right up until bankruptcy or buy-out, whichever it was.
