Milwaukee Road sd40-2

Hi

After electric bells were removed from Milwaukee Road SD40-2s where did they locate the mechanical bells? Except for some sidemounts almost all photos show NO visible bell. Your help would be very much appreciated.

I think they were mounted under the frame…it’s not uncommon for diesels to have bells mounted there.

IIRC, they were mounted underframe behind the right front truck, like most roads.

Thanks for your prompt reply but please note that they are usually under the running board and easily seen on photos. Not so with the MILW SD40-2s where they are no where to be seen. I’m wondering if they could be behind the pilot and invisible etc?

Try a site called SD45.com. I just went there and did a qiuck look. They moved them behind the left side of the cab. It’s a MP style up near the roof line, barely visible in most photo’s. Sorry, I don’t know how to post photo’s. I guess I should have checked it out before I answered you’re question the first time[#oops][V]

The January/February 2007 issue of Diesel Era magazine had a nice feature on MILW SD40-2’s. Photos in that article of the 18, 29, 149, 154, 168, 174, 193 and 196 clearly show a hood-mounted bell at the top of the long hood on the fireman’s side between the cab and the air intake grille.

MP’s hood-mounted bells were behind the air intake grille. MILW’s had to be ahead of the grille due to the dynamic brake housing.

What I meant by MoPac-style was the type of bell used, not the exact location of the bell. But anyways…

Thank you all. The placement behind the cab is quite apparently correct and almost invisible on photos.

My apologies. I understand your point. Picking nits is a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it…

“Come on home, all is forgiven”[(-D] I reread my post and I can see how it could be read the way you thought. Bad wording on my part.[D)]

Not a problem. Look what bad wording did for Yogi Berra…[:D]
