Minatur Wunder Land A Must See Video

There are two video links below. They both sho the same thing but I found the second one worked the best for me.

The layout is located in Hamburg Germany so I’m sure Ulrich knows all about it and Wolfgang also.

This is the world’s biggest train set. It covers 1,150 square meters / 12,380 square feet and features almost six miles of track - and is still not complete. Twin brothers Frederick and Gerrit Braun, 41, began work on the ‘Miniature Wunderland’ in 2000. The set covers six regions including America , Switzerland , Scandinavia , Germany , and the Austrian Alps.

The American section features giant models of the Rocky Mountains, Everglades , Grand-Canyon etc … and Mount Rushmore . The Swiss section has a mini-Matterhorn. The Scandinavian part has a 4ft long passenger ship floating in a ‘fjord.’

It is expected to be finished in 2014, when the train set would cover more than 1,800 square meters / (19,376 sq ft) and feature almost 13 miles of track, by which time detailed models of parts of France, Italy and the UK would have been added. It comprises 700 trains with more than 10,000 carriages and wagons. The longest train is 46ft long.

The scenery includes 900 signals, 2,800 buildings, 4,000 cars - many with illuminated headlights…and 160,000 individually designed figures. Thousands of kilograms of steel and wood was used to construct the scenery…

The 250,000 lights are rigged up to a system that mimics night and day by automatically turning them on and off. The whole system is controlled from a massive high-tech nerve centre. In total the set has taken 500,000 hours and more than
8 million euro to put together, the vast majority of which has come from ticket sales.

Yes, it’s a beauty, and one of a kind…but I swear, if one more of my non-modelling friends sends me this link, I think I’ll scream…

I agree bigpianoguy,

got it from so many friends it aint funny.

I’m going to Europe later this year and hope to get a look up close, but we will be in the south of Germany (Hamburg is in the north) and our itinerary is tight.

I know how you feel [swg]

Whenever some one learns that I am into model railroading, I get the question whether I have been there. I know confess in public that I have been there 8 times and I might be going there another 8 times. Each time I discovered details I had not seen before. It is not a layout as we understand it, but it is certainly a well made display of trains and model work.

Frederik and Gerrit Braun are amiable, but certainly crazy guys. They are the driving force behind all those gimmicks.

I can certainly recommend paying a visit, should you come near Hamburg.

A trip to Germany is on the cards for me next year too. I have a school friend living in Berlin and I’ve always wanted to have a look around the country. I guess a visit to Hamburg wouldn’t go astray, Maybe I would run into you Ulrich… [:o)]

It´ll be a pleasure meeting you in Hamburg, James! I live about 30 mile southwest of Hamburg and the train takes me to town just in 30 minutes.

Some things never get old.

The link to this video does. [|(]
