Mining crew uncovers buried 4-4-0 in Florida

So, what do we know about it? When was it built? Is it standard gauge or narrow gauge? What do we know about Manchester Locomotive works? When were they in business? What wheel arrangements did they build other, than 4-4-0? Was this locomotive used in mining or logging?

Thave the Phosphate Museum in Mulberry so why not have the loco go there.

The Lakeland, Florida newspaper posted several excellent photos of the locomotive on their website.

Is there some reason TRAINS could not post at least ONE photo to accompany this story??

I bet this 4-4-0 would look great in Penn Central heritage paint.

Not the best place to hide a loco especially if you intend to come back and use it !

Having had some experience with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, they will prob’ly arrest the loco as an illegal immigrant from Cow Hampshire. Rightly so! Florida didn’t collect sales tax on it!

Wonderful thing about the internet, George, in the time you spent asking these questions, you could have been looking up the answers. I trust you were.

What a suprise to find such a great loco. For those uncovering the 4-4-0, it must have made their day! It would be appreciated if a photo of the find and the history about the locomotive were provided by TRAINS in the near future.

How in the world did a steam locomotive get buried, considered its size and weight? Considering the state had some questions about the land ownership, something suspicious over its legality had to be going on at the time the locomotive was buried. I’ll have to go out there and take a look for myself.
