Minnesota short line getting “Northern Pacific” SD45s

There were about 100 sand cars on the line but most of them disappeared and there were only about 30 sand cars at the North Branch plant on 5/7/14 when I passed by.

I wonder if they really are ex-NP, the SD45 cores SP and KCS had rebuilt as SD40s came from everywhere, there is a chance they were

No they aren’t original NP but rebuilds in the NP scheme. The only surviving true NP SD45 belongs to the Lake Superior RR Museum in Duluth, Minn.

They can be traced through their builders plate numbers. Would have been nice if that info had been included in the article.

Did these SD45s retain their original V-20s or were they replaced with the more reliable V-16s. When I was at M-K in Boise 30+ years ago, that’s the kind of thing we did. I recall, if the V-20s weren’t properly monitored, they’d tear out main bearings.
