I live close by this area. It will be nice to see a second bridge. I am going to keep a photo time line of the construction.

What a poorly-worded headline. “Missouri bridge groundbreaking eliminates major bottleneck.”

If you just read that, you’d think that just by starting the project, the bottleneck was gone.

Actually, it’s more like ~45 freight trains per day, not 60. Anyway, it’s about time they finally get rid of that bottleneck. It’s only like a quarter of a mile long but the effects ripple down the entire line.

There are a lot of bottlenecks all over the country which need to be eliminated. Getting rid of all of them would undoubtedly help not only Amtrak and commuter rail but also a good many freight trains immensely as well.

With the increase in ridership that we see coming through our Kirkwood station I am looking forward to improved on time performance. Even now with the cooperation of the UP dispatchers Amtrak is enjoying some of the best on time performance in years, and passengers are continually commenting to the positive how great Amtrak travel in Missouri is. I say thank you to MoDOT, UP, Amtrak and everyone interested in passenger rail service for a great job.

Why did it take tax money to pay for it?

Why would UP need to use Tax dollars? This is a UP problem not Amt.

Jerome

Why is it OK to use tax dollars for highways and airports but not for railroads that serve public transport?

Maybe Texans think alike, but I sure agree with Mark Meyer that the headline was poorly done. The bottleneck is not eliminated until the construction is finished and trains start using the new bridge. Changing the verb to “will eliminate” makes the headline grammatically and factually correct.

This needs to happen across the Columbia River between Washington and Oregon too. But it’s tougher to get a project like this going when there is two states involved. I applaud the folks getting it done.

It would have been nice to have a picture of the ceremony or of a train on the current single track bridge, but if you didn’t have one then it’s perfectly fine that you didn’t include a useless stock picture of a train.

I agree the headline could have been worded better.
