Missouri Pacific in a Cheech and Chong movie!

Has anyone seen the Cheech and Chong movie Things Are Tough All Over? About halfway into the movie, the two are driving thru St. Louis on their way from Chicago to Las Vegas, and they drive under an overpass, and we get to see a quartet of MoPac GE’s moving over it![;)] IIRC, it was two B30-7’s sandwiching two U30C’s, the second U30 had an eagle on longhood/buzzsaw on cab emblem, the rest had numbers on longhood/ buzzsaw on cab emblem. I couldn’t tell if it was leading a whole train, or just a few engines moving light. All in all, pretty sweet!

This shot was filmed in illinois, probably at East St. Louis on the east approach of the MacArthur Bridge I assume.[:)] At least I think so. This is my favorite of the C&C films, and no it is not just because of the train!!!

Hey like you honor man…I don’t need no uppers man…and like I don’t need no downers man…and I don’t need no alcohol man…and I don’t need no drugs man…Cause I’m hooked on TRAINS your honor !!!

They could have done better on the power, maybe give us some SD40’s or even a SD40-2C in the mix.[:p] But the GE’s were fine anyway, at least the B-boats still had their original GE cabs (I am not much on the ones outfitted with EMD cabs).[:D] This movie came out in 1982, the same year MP was absorbed into Uncle Pete…[xx(]

Also I noticed the doors were open where the starter is located on the first U30C (the one w/o the eagle on the longhood), not surprising, maybe it crapped out on them and the engineer was trying to restart it. Truly the “*** redheaded stepchild” they were referred to as.[:o)]

I didn’t pay much attention to the MoPac train on Things Are Tough All Over, I did notice a train that went by in the background on Up in Smoke while Cheech and Chong made it back to the US border and it was around the part where the nuns got searched by the cops, I have to watch Things Are Tough All Over again, my favorite Cheech and Chong movie is Next Movie.

Bringing this topic back up… just received the DVD of this movie yesterday. At least with it I could read the numbers on the locomotives… in order they were U23B 4518, U30C 2965, another U30C trailing, this one had the turbo eagle on the long hood with the buzzsaw on the cab, with the road number in tiny print above the turbo eagle, therefore being unreadable, and B23-7 4684 rounding out the consist. But I think there was a fifth locomotive, looked like another U30C, that I could see as the scene faded out.

Talking to someone familiar with this part of East St. Louis, the train is heading west from Dupo towards St. Louis, but clearly looks like it’s moving east. Unless he’s right and it is going west, which means the scene was probably filmed in the late morning-early afternoon as the sun is straight up by then. Oh and C&C are heading south on route 3.

Got some ‘video captures’ for those clueless. And don’t give me a hard time about my means of capturing it!
