Mixed Passenger Cars

Hello All,

Can anyone tell me if it was prototypical for the PRR and NYC to mix Madison passenger cars and streamliners in the same consist?

Thanks,

They did it all the time in the 1950’s and 1960’s prior to Amtrak. I rode both the PRR and NYC and you would see the six axle standards mixed in with the lightweight streamliners all the time. In fact, when I was riding the B&O National Limited when it wrecked, it definitely had both types of cars.

Back in the late '60’s. I rode the Gulf Wind from Jacksonville, FL to New Orleans. We stopped in the middle of the night in Flomaton, Alabama and eventually were coupled to L&N’s Pan American for the rest of the run to New Orleans. There was a heavyweight diner with 6 wheel trucks in the consist. One of the smoothest riding cars I ever had the pleasure to ride.

I road the New Haven/ PC from Stamford CT to Boston in the early 70s in a similar mixed train - not quite madisons but heavyweight cars and dirty stainless streamliners. Isn’t it said there’s a prototype for just about everything?
