Mixing brake types

Could the prototype mix cars with the modern AB type brakes and the older K type in the same train? If not how did they manage during the change over between types?

You in essence answered your own question. Any improvement put into general use MUST be compatible with the previous system to permit transition from one to the other. This is way electropneumatic braking has not yet been adopted.

That “way” is supposed to be “why”.

Thanks for the info. I thought that was the case. I’ve looked in books and on the web for the answer and found everything about how the systems worked, but nowhere did it say they would work together. Again thanks for clearing that up.
