I am trying to model the MKT (Katy) Railroad in HO scale but I have a hard time finding MKT engines such as SD-40s,GP-38s, and GP-7’s. where would be the best place on line to look for a good quality MKT engine. I have found only one SD-40 but it was a dummy and one GP-7 from Atlas. Also, where would be the best place to get track and scenery for a HO scale layout?
Athearn has a decent selection of Katy stuff. But, just because Athearn catalogues it, doesn’t mean it’s avalable. Athearn is a batch producer, so once a run is produced, it may be a few years before it’s done again.
You’ll have to do some hunting for pre-painted items. Try Trainworld or MB Kleins. Both sites are also good places for track and scenery. You could also try E-bay roulette.
You may end up having to custom paint you Katy stuff. Microscale has an OK selection of MKT decals.
[#welcome]First of all, welcome to the forum! Your first place to look will be your LHS (local hobby shop). If you live in a rural area and do not have a LHS, this will take you to about the largest supplier of hobby stuff around - http://www.walthers.com/. Athern has a web sight also - just Google Athern - and they have made a number of KATY units over the years and their quality is good. There are better units around for higher prices, but Athern is what most of us started with in the hobby. Again, welcome![:D]
I started by making my own Katy F units. They are fairly simple to do. I used Athearn F7’s and I’m starting to work on a GP-7. There are lots of freight cars on the market. Athearn also has some RTR locomotives out there in Katy. I bought some Athearn heavyweights and I’m going to repaint them into Katy’s. You just need to search there is stuff out there and make the rest. Plenty of good resource material to reference.
