The Minnesota Zephyr is closing up and its last run is 12-31-07. Yep it goes just behind the house I live in. You could throw a rock from the train and hit my pickup. I’ve never been on it but hope to buy a ticket to go on it before closing. It looks like the land the line is on is sold to the county for a bike/walking trail. The county will then sell it to the state to add to the states bike train system. This will link up with another trail just south of 96. They have the depot building for sale seperately. I’m sure they are already trying to sell the train itself. The line is isolated so all cars/engines have to be trucked out of here. Initially they did have the entire business up for sale over a year ago but no one bit. This lines last freight run was in 82. The retired BN engineer who ran it lives just down the road from me. Someone has got to get some video of the train going up/down the line from inside the cab. I don’t have a video camera. The organization seems loose enough that they would let someone do that. I did see it take possibly its last trip through deep snow last february or march after a snow storm. No camera but man it was beautifull!
