Mo-Pac on UP Question.

Are there still any possible Mo-Pac SD40-2’s on the UP system as of today.
If so What are the UP numbers so that I will know that they are Mo-Pac’s.
Thanks,Allan.

If I remember correctly, the SD40-2s without dynamic brakes in the 9800 and 9900 series are former Missouri Pacific. According to UP’s roster (http://www.uprr.com/aboutup/locorost2005.pdf), there are a total of 11 SD40-2s in the 9885-9947 series.

By the looks of things. There is hardly anything left. There is only “one” Mo-Pac" SD50 left on the UP! And by the looks of it,There are still plenty of Mo-Pac B23-7’s & B30-7’s still on the system. Allan.

Mo-Pac was one of only a few to order SD40-2’s without dynamic brakes. They should be easy to spot as they don’t sport grids. They were a p.i.t.a. when we tested them 'cause we had to hook them up to external load test boxes. Almost as bad as the Chessie GP40-2 that only had low amp grids that needed a parallel connection external load box.

Im sorry to diss agree with you. Click on this link.
Allan.

The majority of the MP fleet was without dynamic brakes…I think UP has a few engines in the 78xx and 79xx that were also ex-Mopac engines. (well, at least, they don’t have dynamic brakes)

No disagreement, didn’t say they were exclusive to no DB. They weren’t even exclusive to dark blue. I remember one coming through LaGrange in Burgundy.

I saw the UP 7898 the other day here in Kentucky. A UP SD40-2 with no dynamic brakes and quite a bit of rust up high on the hood sides near the exhaust stack. Looked like she had had a fire at some point.

FYI I was told by somebody in Grand Island that the UPRR lost a lawsuit concerning fallen flags. They were trying to prohibit someone from distrubing something from one of the fallen flags without a license. The judge said either use it or you lose so if the UPRR wants to keep the MOPAC or any other RR they bought they will have to repaint cars/locos in teh paint of that RR. If the UPRR still has some of the locos you are asking about you may again see them in MPRR colors. I think that is why those CNW locos were put into shiney new varnish as well. [:o)][:p][:)]

NO WAY! Is this true?
Allan.

I haven’t heard about or seen any CNW units put into “shiney new varnish”, but UP is repainting several dozen freight cars into SSW, CNW, SP, etc. paint with brand new logos.

In similar posts above, I did hear that UP lost an appeal on the fallen-flag lawsuit. Maybe someone here that’s fluent on the details can fill us in.

Take care,

Russell

This is great news Mopac will be back on the rails maybe yeah!!!

Ya I am with you there man[(-D].
Allan.

Back to the original topic of this thread, there is a batch of de-rated ex-MP SD40-2’s in the UPY 800 series. They are classed as SD38-2’s and serve as hump pushers.

As far as the story about the lawsuit over “fallen flag” trademarks, I am personally quite skeptical about the story since it sounds too much like wishfull thinking.
