MDC was bought by Horizon Hobby and merged into Athearn. You’ll find MDC products on the Athearn Web site. Check http://www.athearn.com

For some reason there are tons of MDC-Roundhouse products out there, I’m sure you can find any product they ever made, new, on ebay there are pages of items and some sellers seem to have hundreds of kits for sale, I would assume these were bought up from warehouses or closed hobby shops, the selection is fantastic,I picked up a set of 3 log cars in one kit for $12.00 and they are all metal, they also had one of the most diversified selection of train and train-related items around, where are these companies now when we need them?
You think this means Roundhouse stuff will get Athearn quality?

Some of them will get better quality. For example, the old MDC RS-3 is coming soon from Athearn RTR, and looks to be the most accurate plastic RS-3 ever made.

What about stuff like the MDC two truck Shay? I’m just wondering if they will try to upgrade to the quality of the Bachmann HO units. I wanted a two truck originally, but only MDC made them. I saw a brand new one run, and was not impressed. The Bachmann has them beat the snot out of right now.
Well, Roundhouse has released their 30-foot wood caboose in RTR–I have some that I built from kits some years back, and let me tell you that the RTR version is just a honey. I picked up two of the Rio Grande cabeese and they’re just as good as the Walther’s, and not only that, they STAY on the tracks! Yippee!!

I have several MDC hopper cars that I purchased back in the 90s. Pretty decent and unlike my Athearn BB cars, these have been trouble free. They looked much nicer once I applied some basic “wash” weathering and P2K wheelsets.
I was unfortunate enough to buy a batch of Athearn cars that have mishapen or “undersized” ears on the coupler boxes. I’ve always like Roundhouse/MDC’s “screw in” coupler boxes. Two of my Athearn BB 54 foot hoppers have undersized body tabs that won’t hold the body in place, so now I have to “rig repair” them.
Oddly enough every problem child I own was a MDC/Roundhouse or Walther car…I found the screws would eventually fall out of the trucks and/or the trucks touched the floor on the MDC 50’ boxcars…As far as the Walthers I found the plastic is to soft and the coupler box doesn’t hold to well…Their RTR gon needs work as well.The RTR tank cars seems to be the best Walthers has to offer.
Good luck trying to find anything on the Athearn web site. It has to be one of the most cumbersome ones I have ever seen with respect to searching for something

Navigating the Athearn website, for me, is a challenge.
Again here is another fine example of those that seem to enjoy bashing Athearn without any facts.Sigh! How hard is the Athearn web page by clicking on the advance search message? I find it easier to use then the Walther’s site.
Resently I needed a replacement Jack Shaft for my Roundhouse 2 Truck Shay contacted Customer Service Via Phone: 310-763-1740 followed by a Fax: 310-763-7449 and the part within 10 work days. I think thats not to bad of service.
