Model fleets

I model the modern BNSF and UP in the West.
My biggest “fleets” are
[:)]

  • 15 SD70M (UP, SP and a NS plus 5 SD75M/I)
  • 15 Dash9-44W (AT&SF, BNSF, C&NW, SP, UP)
  • 11 SD40-2 (BNSF, C&NW, UP, UP-MP)
  • 8 SD70MAC (BN and BNSF)

I own two each of the following:

GE 44-tonner (both SN)
Single-truck Birney (one will be SN, one PG&E)
GP-7 (one WP, one SP)

I own two more GE 44-tonners, plus I have an extra GE 70-tonner and SW-7, plus four or five Brill trolleys, but those are slated for conversion to as-yet-unbuilt trolleys or freight motors and thus are not counted in the above totals.

I’ve got 5 Alco C-424-425’s. I consider them all the same, as the differences were small.
my display fleet has a bunch of 40-2’s, maybe 8-10 of them. But they get no run time. And unless I get busy, neither will the Alcos!

several models I have more than one:
5 rivarossi bigboys,
2 rivarossi challenger
3 rivarossi FEF
several F3A and F3B units

I voted two, however I currently have 5 FP45s. Out of the 5, I will be selling two of them on Ebay after I detail two of the Silver & Red Warbonnets and repaint and detail one into the Dark Blue & Yellow scheme (non-warbonnet version).

I don’t want to have any more than 25 locomotives as while more may seem desirable, maintenance headaches creep up if long time periods occur between runs. A few years back I winded up selling some units because of this.

I have and Acela and the dummy comes with that. And in Dash 8 (AMtrak)

My largest “fleet” is made up of 7 PRR GP7/9’s followed by 5 CNJ RS3’s and 5 CNJ RDC’s.

I’ve currently got over 150 engines, which will be pared down to 35-40 layout runners and 10-15 display pieces. Of my runners, the vast majority will be of three types of engines: 8-10 NKP H-6 Mikados (USRA clones), 6-8 Berkshires, and 8-10 GP7/9/18. Even when I was freelancing, the vast majority of my fleet was going to be comprised of a single standardized engine class (10-12 Mantua Mikados).

Loco’s from connecting railroads bring trains in from staging. With 36 staging tracks and at least two locos per train, at least 72 but I haven’t counted them in a long time.

All HO Kato power.
SD70MAC.
1.BN9580. Cream&Green.
2.BN9615. Creem&Green.

SD70MAC.
1.BNSF8802.
2.BNSF9838.
3.BNSF9959.

AC4400CW.
1.BNSF5602.
2.BNSF5615.
3.BNSF5624.
END OF LIST.

The most available model in my fleet are SD40-2’s (9) followed by GP38-2’s (5)

After those I have 4 GP40-s & a pair of AC4400’s
The rest are all singles

Gordon

Six of the following

RS-3
RS-11
C425/424
GP18
GP38-2
S-2
SD-40-2
GP-30

WHAT CAN I SAY I CAN’T BUY A FEW AT A TIME!!!

10 F7’s, A’s & B’s
8 GP9’s
6 FA’s
2 S-2’s
2 44 tonners
3 SD40’s
3 2-8-0’s
4 GP38’s
plus odds & ends

2 each M-78 D&RGW 4-8-2
2 each L-105 D&RGW 4-6-6-4
2 each DM&IR M-4 2-8-8-4
2 each Pennsy M-1a 4-8-2
2 each C&S USRA 2-10-2

I don’t have too many engines right now because I recently modified plans for my freelanced railroad’s paint scheme (had no idea it would be so difficult).

For the layout, I will need…

12 SD75I from Athearn Genesis
3 SD90Mac from Kato
9 AC4400CW from Kato
4 SD60M from Proto 2000
8 GP38-2 from Proto 2000
5 SD40-2 from Kato
2 SD40 from Kato

that’s 42 custom builts which will cost me a fortune. Plus I will have some foreign power too.

I already have 1 Amtrak P-40 (athearn), 1 Via F-40 (spectrum), and 2 CSX AC4400CW (athearn).

I will need 1 Via P-42 (athearn), 1 CSX SD80Mac (kato), 2 CEFX AC4400CW (kato), 2 UP SD90mac (kato), 1 CNW C44-9W (kato), 3 BNSF warbonet SD75M, and 1 NS C40-8W (atlas).

I may get more but I will have to see about that.

So far I have-

1 HO UP FEF-3 844 [would like to get another one, the 843]
1 HO UP MT-73 [would like to get the BLI one as well, I have the spectrum one]
1 HO UP 0-6-0
1 HO SP SD7

Coming soon…

1 HO UP Athearn 4-6-6-4
1 or 2 HO UP Atlas SD24s
An AB set of HO ATSF PAs
An AB set of HO ATSF F7s
1 Spectrum HO SP GS-4 Daylight

And just because I want them…
1 Kato CRQ SD80MAC
1 Atlas Amtrak 8-40BW
1 Athearn ATSF FP45
1 Athearn ATSF F45

Largest class in my fleet would be Dash 9s - I have 4 powered (ok, one’s an AC4400) and 2 dummy examples (not all in the same paint scheme). This translates as 2 C&NW Dash 9s, 2 BNSF Dash 9 dummies, 1 CSX Dash 9 and 1 CSX AC4400. I don’t plan to buy any more, though if a powered BNSF example came up on eBay I would be very tempted to buy one to run with my dummy examples (one of these runs with a Walthers Dash 8-40B on an Auto-rack train).

Suffice it to say I have several types of C&O units that numbers between 4 to 10 units except for the back bone of the C&O fleet. The GP7 and GP9…I have 12 GP7s and 16 GP9s I have 6 GP7s and GP9s lettered for my C&HV.

I have a boat load of Atlas’s GP-38s (30+) but now I am waiting for Atlas (I hope!) or Life LIke to come out with a GP40-2 as I need about 50 of them.

I have no duplicates. No two of the same locomotive. Why? Cause the money I use to buy duplicate can go towards another different loco I may want. Example-- I’m awaiting the BLI SF 3800. I have X amount of money, if I spend it on another Cab-forward, there goes my 3800. So I’d rather have the 1 Cab-forward and 1 SF 3800 than 2 Cab-forwards.
