Its not that bad of a model. To me anyways. It was part of my first train set that came with it, when I was a kid. I bought the new version. It runs alright Still as loud as the orginal. But for me it was ‘completing the circle’ of life.
I really enjoy the industrial switching locomotives, but I do agree that performance isn’t all that good. There is a great article in last months MR from a reader that used two switchers (not this same model) to allow 8 wheel pickup instead of just 4. I have a Bachmann Plymouth switcher in HO scale that works alright, but to gain perfect performance I was thinking about picking up a cheaper Model Power model like this one, making it a dummy by removing the worm gear and running the pickup wires to the Bachmann model.
I have the old one too, and It runs great. If you think that it can’t pull much, add some weight, and It will be a whole new engine, now mine runs waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better.
I used to have a Model FAILURE RS-2. About a week after I got it, I deadlined it. Didn’t touch it until I sold it not too long ago. This is why the only things I buy from MP are cars, end of story. At least they don’t screw THOSE up, or their vehicles, then they’d out of biz!
