Model Power N scale 2-6-0 Mogul
I found the Rapido coupler can be changed to a MicroTrains coupler without much fuss. Then your REALLY have a fine locomotive. (Why do they still put Rapido couplers on new models??)
I purchaed one for Southern Pacific, it had an oil tender, and even correct engine number! Pulls OK, about 4-6 short passenger cars. A bargain for a steam loco…
Was thinking of purchasing this loco, but have no experience or knowledge of Model Power engines. Still looking for more input on their engines, good, bad or other wise. Thanks.
I have the Model Power Mogul, but its the SP version with the vanderbilt tender. It does run pretty smooth for such a small engine… and I also wondered…in this day in age…why would Model Power put a Rapido coupler on anything? Its like stepping back into the dark ages.
I have had nothing but problems with this engine. Ran for a while then stopped. No matter what I did, could not get it to run. Sent it back for repair and monthes later it came back only to sit on the track and not run…
I have ended up using it as part of the scenery… I will stick to Kato… Never had a problem with anything I purchase from them.
I have an undecorated one too. Lots of variations possible with the extra parts supplied. Lovely smooth runner, with a surprising amount of power, thanks to the traction tire.
I am thinking of adding some steam motive power, and this does look like a good candidate. I am sure that the UP had these so looks like an undec would be what I want. With the help of these reviews, it is easy to make up your mind and make a wise purchase.
It is very telling that it took months to get a faulty loco repaired or (replaced). Also the Rapido coupler is ludicrous in today’s market. In my view Model Power has a mixed history regarding quality of HO and N scale products. Some have been OK, but you are taking your chances (again, in my opinion). However, it is nice to have a small steam loco in N scale. I wonder how difficult it would be to add a DCC decoder.
Got it in HO scale
they put those couplers on because they have so many in stock. they wont waste anything!!!
I replaced my coupler with micro-trains 1025, or the 1023 which is already assembled. You have to redrill a hole for the screw and that hole needs to be right where the tender body seats. Therefore the screw will come thru the chassis and keep the tender shell from seating. You can try cutting down the screw (good luck). I put a notch in the tender shell to accomodate the screw excess and painted the screw black. The excess is invisible and it looks good. I also put a thin piece of styrene behind the pad that held the original coupler, otherwise it will be difficult to get the new coupler to seat level. My locomotive runs OK, not great. It does stop inexplicably in one spot on my track…27 other locomotives have no problem. Whadup w/dat?
I’m looking for a steam loco for a new layout. It will be 1890-1910 logging or coal scene. I picture a mine or timber lot at one end and a shipping port at the other. Is this loco of the right time frame? Any help appreciated…I’m a newbie here. TNX
Well folks, the jury must be still out on this one. Good luck and
Happy Rails…
Looks nice…and that’s about it.
Can’t comment about the above mogul but I agree that the Model Power Pacific is a nonstarter. To be avoided unfortunately.
Great runner on DC. I have yet to see it run on DCC control, but expect it to perform just as well if not better. Unfortunately, it stalled some on my Bachmann track, but a nudge with my finger got it going again.
Looks nice. I’m currently going to buy a Northern Pacific-lettered one. I plan to model Bellingham, Washington in 1927, so this might fit.
I just got the Model Power’s 2-6-0 mogul. It runs just fine on Bachmann’sE/Z track, which can be a problem at times. It goes thru the switches with no derailments. I clean the track with Labelle 105 track cleaner and conditioner which helps a lot.
I have three, plus the MP 4-4-0. They run fine on my oval and turnouts, but next time I’ll use Peco electro-frogs. The small engines run better across them. The latest 2-6-0 had kadee couplers included.
