We all know about the 70th Anniversary Railroad Boxcar travelling over the USA, I would like to know if anything similar has been done with a model railroad/railway car. If not I was thinking we could get a railroad car and pass it on from modeller to modeller. Each person upon receiving the car could take a photo of it on their layout or in some train related setting. The photos could be posted on a website, perhaps this one. Potentially this railway car could travel to modellers all over the world.
If it lasted for 5-10 years we could perhaps donate it to some model rail organization or raffle it off, the proceeds of which could be donated to a voted on organisation or charity. I would happily buy the car when I get home in a couple of weeks. I was thinking of an O Scale freight car, even though I model HO. I just think, correct me if I am wrong that it would be more robust.
I guess we would have to select:
Scale
Type of car
Make
and whatever else that anybody can come up with.
If this has been done then this thread should just die. Well thanks for reading Craig.[:)]
I remember one of the magazines had a special boxcar made up and it was photographed on several ‘big name’ model railroads. MR also has a NPP Milw Hiawatha engine that made the photo circuit on several model layouts for a 50th or 60th anniversary issue.
Correct and it was done by both MR and RMC on different anniversary occasions…but as Jim points out, they went only to a select few big name hobbyist’s layouts to be photographed for a magazine article.
The idea of circulating such a car(s) among average joes has been proposed a number of times on this forum and, once the logistical difficulties are realized, the concept is quickly dropped.
Thanks for the info JIm. Thats the problem with 6 billion people in the world all the good ideas have already been thought of. Time to reinvent the wheel.[:I]
