MODEL RAILROADER LAYOUT DATA BASE

I TRYED TO FIND A TRACK PLAN IN YOUR DATABASE …but could not find it its called the SHINGLEHOUSE, TURTLEPOINT & WESTERN RR i searched the whole database and could not find it… it was published in the TRACK PLANNING IDEAS book #12050 year 1981 SO WHY CAN"T I FIND IT ???

hmmmmm… I looked through both the first two names seperately then western got lots of hits for western but not the one you wanted. is it in the book? just tried google results were worthless. youtube had nothing. I can’t find anything.

When I searched the other day, I did see something to the effect of the DB goes back some 30 years or so, and more was being added. Mind you, so far it appears to be MR mag track plans only, not other books or specials, so it probably hasn’t been archived yet. If I had to guess, I’d say they plan to do all the MR back issues first before moving to special issues and such.

hi this book is made by kalmbach 1981 TRACK PLANNING IDEAS FROM MODELRAILROADER 58 TRACK PLANS FROM PAST ISSUES AND THE PLAN IS BY BILL LIVINGSTON THATS ALL I KNOW ABOUT IT MYSELF … IT NEVER SAID WITCH ISSUE IT WAS FROM … I STILL CAN’T FIGURE OUT WHY THEY SET UP THE DATA BASE TO DOO SQUARE FEET …WHEN ALL TRACK PLANS GO BY FEET AND INCHES OR ROOM SIZE …OR LAYOUT SIZE AND NOT SQUARE FOOTAGE

HI … I DID the same too… i looked under all names …even the guy who did the track plan …and found nothing… but i find out that this database only goes back asfar as jan 1986 and only for MRR magazines and this plan was published in 1981 by kallmbach from track plans from the pages of MRR. very strange. thank you for your help sofar

I’ll keep looking and see if I find anything.

I think Twcenterprises may have the reason in his post as to why it may not be appearing here.

Hi Boyd,

as stated before only in the 80’ MR started to go digital. Since the book is from 81 and contains plans from the 20 previous years (from the 60’ and 70’) ; you will not find these “old” plans in the database.

With all the facing and trailing spurs a run-around track or two would be a great addition. The 2 tracks leading to the edge of the layout could be easily used for interchange and staging.

The plan above is close enough to the original to give a pretty good idea.

I would like my trains to start at Millport and finish their route in Tionesta Woods near the logging camps. So IMHO both these areas could need a run-around. BTW Shingle House seems quite some switching puzzle to me. A tunnel between Shingle house and Camp 3 would give the impression Camp 3 is the end of the line.

Interesting:

The plan in the Sept 62 Model Railroader is two around the room ovals (upper level and lower level) that share a single track section at Shingle Springs Shinglehouse. Access is by duckunder. It has a logging industry theme.

Another version appears on the back cover of a book TRACK DESIGN published by Penn Craft Books (predessor of Carstens Publications) in 1960. It is a walk-in, out-and-back configuration and the theme is mining.

The area called Shingle Springs Shinglehouse on the Model Railroader Plan is called Turtlepoint on the Penn Book plan and the smaller stations are located differently and have different names.

Both “plans” are oblique drawings, not plan views. There are no dimensions on the MR plan, From dimensions on the Penn plan, it appears to be overall 11’ x 11 or 11’ x 12’.

Checking the issue list for the track plan database, it only goes back to 1986. It is growing since at the start it only went back into the late 90’s.

Special issues of track plans are usually from back issues of the magazine. Some exceptions are Great Model Railroads and Model Railroad Planning as well as some of the books by one author. GMR and MRP track plans have been included in the database, but I don’t know if all issues have been included or just the ones since the database was started.

As you have noticed, old plans are not yet included. However, you can buy a dvd with all the issues of MR from 1934 through 2009. While the price is not cheap, on a per issue basis it is cheaper than collecting back print issues - takes up a lot less space too.

Enjoy

Shinglehouse, Turtlepoint & Western is originally a December 1957 Railroad Model Craftsman article from Carstens (not Kalmbach), and reprinted in Carstens Track Design (a most excellent book as Bill & Ted would say).

I was going to ask if the book is a reprint of the 1960 Penn Craft book, but can tell from your link that it is not. However, the Shinglehouse, Turtlepoint & Western plan is the same.

While there were many good plans in the old days (like the one being discussed) there has been a real revolution in layout design thought since the 1960’s. Although most of the “modern” ideas used today existed then, they were not the way it was generally done.

As the title of the article from MR suggests (“My layout just growed”), it changed over the years; the Shinglehouse area was first (HOn3 in 1953), and he built around the room wall by wall, eventually bringing it all the way around, with a duckunder. He also went to HO standard gauge about 1955; some of the layout was for a while an electric line with overhead wire. In 1959 or so, he switched the theme from mining to logging.

The text of the MR article (Sept. 1962) says the layout is an eleven foot square.

Over the years, it was covered in articles and photo spreads a number of times in MR and RMC*.*

hi IRONROOSTER i did buy the MRR dvd set …and i have serached every issue and did not find it there…but i am disapointed with kalmbachs dvd set it has no searching tools ,no index, and some issues were scaned badly and a few select pages of some issues are too small to look at or are sideways and can’t be used .you can’t even save a page from it so you could use IE to flip it so to view it better … THEY SHOULD REISSUE IT AND FIX IT AND EXCHANGE THE ONE I BOUGHT FOR A NEWER VERSION… pipe dreams… well thanks for the info

hi paul thanks for the plan … the plan in the book looked better it was a 3d drawing of the plan… i was hoping for more info …i am trying to adapt it for G scale i have my 2 car garage 17 feet by 19 feet all just for my trains …i just installed 4 new windows and new lights and a heater for winter and an exaust fan for summer … thank you for your help boyd

???

I found the plan in the Sept 62 issue using the Search function on the DVD. The Title and Keywood does not find it, but the full text search for “Shinglehouse” finds 6 unique references to the model railroad.

1: Oct 1955: photograph

2: Feb 1960: Article on the Southern Tier Short Line Association, an informal club that compiled and printed a Official Guide of their 21 model rail roads.

3: Dec 1961: photograph

4: Sep 1962: Article and track plan

5: Dec 1962: Note that the railroad had been torn down due to a move, and some pieces salvaged and given to another molder.

6: Nov 1962: Note that an old box car body was found buried in plaster on one of the salvaged sections

good job .thank you for the list …i found why my search engine on the dvd set failed …cause it did not install properly .so i uninstalled it and then reinstalled …and now its working… and kalmbach did not tell any one that … disk 1 has issues jan 1934 thru dec 1963 disk 2 has issues jan 1964 thru dec 1989 disk 3 has issues jan 1990 thru dec 2009 and some pages were poorly scanned and lots of double page photos don’t line up …
