I have over 500 issues of MRR mag. from 1949 to 2000 in excellent cond. that I would like to give(free) to a good home. I can not ship them & I live in south Florida. You have to pick them up if interested. There will be other magazines included. You need a mini-van to move this many issues.
How about donating them to a local veterans hospital…most of them have delivery vehicles capable of picking up bulk loads such as yours. I’m sure the guys would gladly welcome your Model Railroader magazines.
The closest VA hospital to me is over 100 miles away & I did contact them & they want me to deliver them. They only wanted about 50 of the newer ones.
If I don’t find someone to take them in the next 10 days I’m going to start ripping out all the things that I want to keep & throwaway the rest. I did that on issues from 1934 to 1949 about 10 years ago. Couldn’t find anyone to take those oldies either. It’s a shame that you can’t give away a nice collection like I have. There would be about 100 other mags besides the MRR’s.
Oh well, That’s what happens when you collect stuff like magazines & RR books. I tried to sell a bunch of my RR hard cover books at train show about 5 years ago w/no luck. I had the prices down at the giveaway level too.
GAPRR, except for “Which is best? Atlas or Kato.” and “Can I run my Big Boy on 18” radius curves?’ this topic has been about the most prolific one since I joined the forum about 14 and a half months ago. You have discovered something, nobody wants your used magazines. Several years ago at a swap meet I tried to sell twenty seven years back issues of MR and RMC at COVER PRICE ONLY; I got a few responses for individual issues but I wanted to get rid of complete years. I could probably have given them away but nobody seemed to want to expend their train budget on purchasing back issues of magazines. I brought them home and I still have them and, much to the chagrin of my wife, I will probably hang onto them. Like you, I have given considerable thought to cutting them up and putting them in document protectors in loose-leaf binders.
I would love to get my hands on everything you have from 1949 thru 1958 but I don’t live anywhere near Florida so I can not possibly pick them up. If you wanted to box those issues up and take them to UPS and get the shipping costs for them I’ll foot the freight bill.
R.T.P., I think I’ll pass on shipping these mags anyplace. Appreciate your interest, but, I don’t have the time to box them up & then go 40 miles to a UPS store to get them weighed, etc.
I live in the middle of the state of Florida. 50 to 100 miles form major towns & cities.
Those mags that I ripped up from the 1st bunch are in about 15 binders that are 4" thick inside of clear plastic sleeves, which took me about 6 months & many boxes of 100 to a box sleeves to do. I’m going to release all of those w/these magazines. So, whoever shows up to get all of these mags are going to get all of the good ripouts from 1934 to 1958.
Then I have many other old mags of other train publishers.
I figure that the value on all these mags & binders to be somewhere in the price range of $5000.00 or more.
Heh, I remember a few threads on this topic (on this and other boards) as you mentioned, and they did all seemed to arrive at the same conclusion: while some individual issues have value beyond the slight nostolgic interest, most old magazines (say 15 years or older - sliding window so magazines in the 1990s are passing out of date) have little or no value - the reviews, the articles, the layout tours, etc. - who cares (OK, some articles are indeed useful - hence your and everyone else’s insistance on clipping out the ‘useful’ articles).
Oh well, live is indeed transient…
Have a person coming from the East Coast of Florida that saw the topic on this forum. He will be here about noon saturday to get all the stuff I said I would giveaway for free.
thats good atleast they will get some use. I recently got yrs 67-07 from a guy here locally. I will say there are so many, it will take me forever to look threw them all. but im glad i rescued them from the dumpster. they are valuable info even if there isnt a cash value on them. i am thrilled since i am new to the hobby. i can prolly find anything i need to know in them magizines.
Im down to the last 24 monthly issues. All else gets cut up into bits and scanned into the computer for later re-reading; and the resulting paper waste trashed.
There would be MAJOR copyright issues involved, but it is too bad that the old issues of MR (and RMC) couldn’t be placed on a web site somewhere. Maybe some some could make them into PDS’s that could be down loaded for a fee. Or maybe each volume or two could be sold on CD’s.
Kalmbach has already thrown down thier strong position regarding Copyrights when the idea of using today’s technology and the internet to make it possible for others to read images of old magazines.
I have downloaded and paid for a few Information Station PDF’s and have gotten used to that as the way to get to some of the more articles that have meat and potatoes. I think that is a pretty good way to go for a few dollars here and there.
However, the savings in the space along that one wall and removal of the rotting paper along with the shelf that was damaged and tired from all that weight permitted me to begin construction in the train room so I consider that a plus.
I can relate to this whole thing, although not as many as the Florida guy. I have MR and RMC going back to 1970. I am thinking of scanning what I want also and disposing of the mags. It does just take up too much space after a while. I would love to see the mags go to cds or dvds someday.
