I noticed in todays batch of email that MR sent out an anonymous survey. Anyone else receive it too?? What are your thoughts??? It appeared to me that they were collecting data concerning the interest in DCC and Sound equipped locomotives and looking toward any future releases the arena…Well, for me it was great anyways as it allowed for my own [2c].
Yes, it was on track, seemed to be wieghted towards awareness of Peco’s code 83.
I received it, but it was only for people building a new layout / extension in HO. Guess they don’t care what S scalers do for track.[:(] Oh well.
Enjoy

huh, I didn’t get it.
I received it.
It is decidedly tilted to HO, but then so is MR.
They really ought to change the name to HO MODEL RAILROADER
N scale modellers can not fill out the survey. I guess that N scale opinions do not count, but then it is HO MODEL RAILROADER that we are discussing.
Yeah, I guess we N-scale folks aren’t allowed to participate.[:(!]
I know HO scale is a majority of the hobby, but talk about a lop - sided survey.
Before you all get so worked up go talk to someone who works in marketing and particularly “survey taking”. Sometimes the way to get an accurate survey is to not reveal what you are looking for when you ask the questions. “Is your favorite color blue?” will get you a much different answer than, “What do you think of blue as a color on Santa Fe freight locomotives of the 1970s?” More modelers work in HO than any other scale so naturally MR will feature more HO scale material–there is more of it out there! I model in HO, but enjoy all of the N scale articles MR has featured. Should I be offended by them instead? You guys sound like the, “I didn’t win the drawing so it must be rigged!” crowd.
Drawing? What drawing? Accurate survey? A magazine for multiple scales only surveys
one scale? Not exact science. And I didn’t say a word about the content of MR - only the
survey.
One thing I’ll never understand is how anybody in any scale can not find anything useful in an article written about modeling in a scale different than their own.
C’mon guys ,try reading those articles as a modeler and not as “It ain’t my scale I can’t possibly find anything useful in it”
The specific complaint is about the survey.
While I did remark that MR is slanted toward HO, and I stand by that remark, I never typed anything about how I can not possibly get anything from an article about another scale.
I got the idea about making a trailer coach for my N scale Bachpersonn doodlebug from two shells from an article by a guy who did it in HO. He also gave me an idea for making a boxcab diesel from the cab ends. I learn much about detailing from such articles about larger scale equipment simply because larger scales allow for more detailing. WIth more information in hand, I can decide what details I want on my equipment and structures.
The survey is rigged. It is for HO only. While the opening question could be interpreted as applying to any scale (are you going to expand an existing pike?), the subsequent questions do not work for N scale (no code 83 or 100 in N, to my knowledge). Read the questions on the track. This is why we N scalers are making the comments that we are.
I got the survey as well… HO Scale, Peco Code 83 rail, etc…
Also, I agree w/ Catt. I used to be one of those “It ain’t my scale I can’t possibly find anything useful in it”, until I decided to read a article a few years ago in MRR. It described how to model ‘distance’ in HO by using N scale buildings, scenery, etc. So, now, I read every article that I find may be useful or not, even if it is in another scale as you can always convert to another scale easily. So, my suggestion is to get rid of the ‘chip on the shoulder’ attitude and open up to other scales. I did and it has brought new ideas into my planning for my layout which will be in HO scale.

Before you guys get all bent out of shape don’t overlook the possibility that MR was hired by Peco to conduct an awareness survey about their products. In which case the questions are necessary as is the potential audience and participants. From an MBA in marketing - University of Chicago.
Survey?!
I-DIDN’T-GET-NO-STINKIN-SURVEY!!!
O.K, where’s the town sheriff ?
The survey, what I remember of it, was about HO track. I was trying to be tongue in cheek - but obviously failed.
The hobby slant towards HO is the result of HO being the dominant scale, I don’t think there is a conspiracy here. Remember when MR used to have at least one prototype drawing in every issue - these were frequently in S scale, way beyond the share of S, because that was what fit a page. Still people complained it wasn’t in HO and they couldn’t use it. I agree every article has something of interest no matter what scale it uses. Heck, I even read the articles about modeling modern railroading even though my layout is set in the early 50’s.
Enjoy

If they sent out a questionaire about steam the diesel modellers would get in a huff and vice versa, i model HO and got an N scale questionaire form a bit back, i still filled it in though
I got it to.
