A guy I work with occassionally has started in heavy. I didn’t know until I ran into them at the LHS over the holidays. Appearently it’s a family affair. I gave him the link to my site that has all the links to this and other sites. Sounds like he’s off to a great start.
There are a good number off younsters in this area that have an interest in trains. Every Saturday there are several, not always the same ones, that come in to buy extra track to expand their Christmas starter sets or just to see the demo layout run. It’s not just the child but Daddy too. Also there are usually a few looking and/or buying starter sets. I can tell the newbies since they don’t have the faintest idea of what is needed. With these I spend quite a bit of time explaining the features of a basic set and TMCC, demo included, so that they can consider a TMCC ready starter set. They usually look bewildered at the capabilities of the hobby and aren’t sure which way they want to go. We give them a catalog and show them where to look. In a week or two they’re back for a purchase.
This is the latest in a series of very simmilar news articles that have been posted recently. It’s really great to see that the hobby seems to be getting a lot more exposure lately, both through the media and Lionel making a serious honest effort to attract newcomers. All of this good publicity has me feeling better about the state of the hobby than I have in a long time. Jerry Calabrese is definitely taking Lionel in the right direction.
