Hi Cody!

what is wrong with your web cam?

Thanks for that special treat

Excellent show!

Is the Amtrak book available through Kalmbach and what is the cost?

I’ve not been on Amtrak for 15 years so maybe their service has improved since then. I made a couple trips between Chicago and Boston and between Baltimore and Charleston, SC and had a mixed experience. Mostly they were significantly late and the track south of Washington, DC seemed to be very rough. I think the biggest problem Amtrak has is competing in the fare cost with the low-fare airlines like Southwest. They might be worth trying in the west where the scenery will compensate for any lateness in their schedule. I might try them along the west coast or between Denver and the west coast. Hope they continue their service.

I travel on Amtrak all the time (strange considering I am a licensed pilot) and it is great, perhaps not as fine as the old name trains, but excellent compared to other present day systems. The only curse is the “Ambus” which all too often is used in place of a real train but tht is caused by the “host” railroads rather than Amtrak itself.
Try the train again. They are getting better all the time.

They forgot the E units from the early days. While Amtrak would probably not wish to draw attention, yet to be historically accurate, should be included. Is Kalmbach considering re-issuing their earlier work surrounding Day 1 of Amtrak? regards, andy

Great show. I think I’m with Matt on the horns being the best part. To think I drove within 600 feet of that thing when it was at South Station in Boston and didn’t know about it until the next week…

My real experience with Amtrak was two years ago. Prior to then Australians including me, saw railroad travel as history in USA. Although I had just flown from coast to coast it was after I left New York for LA via Washington, Chicago and SanFrancisco that I started to meet and talk to real Americans while soaking up the country side. From this distance we did not realise how long Amtrak had been a real forward thinking railroad. That 40th Anniversary Book now holds a special place on my bookshelves. If it was not so darn far to fly I would be keen to try out more of the system.

The show brings back some nice memories, thanks!

Good show for those of us who couldn’t make it. Thanks again!

Any time I have the opportunity to take a train I try to. I have a crossed Canada from Vancouver to Halifax a few times. Other trips I have been on were both the ‘Canadian’ and CN’s ‘Super Continental’ I try and model these two trains cora 1965 +/- on my home HO layout…

My wife and I have been on Amtrak a few times going from Chicago to Washington D.C. to NYC, as well as to Toronto and Montreal using Amtrak. Both these runs are long, but enjoyable. The fastest speed we were on was a MagLev in Shanghai it achieved a speed of 434 Km’s per hour for a very short run when we took this when we were in China.

All I want to say is have a great 40th Anniversary and I hope high speed rail comes to the Eastern corridor. I am an avid reader of Trains and enjoy the Magazine.

Cheers

“UNFOTUNATLY, we followed Faison back there in the Seventies…” Haha!

My 'ol lady and I took Amtrak up to Rhode Island from Orlando, FL and back about 7 years ago: it was fun! We had a sleeper compartment at first and I can still remember trying to sleep in the upper birth. We were on CSX track and Man,
what a rough ride. Especially on curves, I just knew that we were going to tip over. Thourghly enjoyed it! My 5th of Jack didn’t hurt either… Cody and the crew did a great job
on the Amtrak 40th!

I am the 1. I have never traveled on a train trip. Yet. I have experienced trains for amusement but never for a trip. Great show. Thanks Cody

Let’s compare, Philadelphia to Boston flying or Amtrak Acela. Get to the airport 2 hours early for security, an hour flight, half hour to get a rental car, half hour plus drive from the airport to downtown. Or, get to 30th Street Station 15 minutes before departure, carry on baggage, big seat, free wi-fi, free laptop power, cell phone service, good food and drink selection, great scenery, arrive in downtown Boston 5 hours later. Priceless. Thanks Cody

rode Amtrack from Portland,Or to Buffalo,NY and return in 2010 great ride and service, love the food. forget flying.
