Modeler’s spotlight video for September 10, 2009 – Inside Cody’s office

I love these episodes! I think you and the guys should have a full show on cable…have you ever thought about doing a weekly 30 or 60 minute show? If those computer guys can do it, I think you should too

Any suggestions on packing model trains using foam sheet or blocks like electronic systems such as computers are packed in?

I just shipped an item to an Ebay customer, with bubble wrap. Wish I’d seen your video first. Now I’m hoping it gets there quickly!

I have used the paper towls for a long time with my “N” scale cars. I just fold the cars in the paper towl like a train car burrito.

When I sell stuff on eBay I like to place the car inside a store plastic bag and use the wadded up plastic bag as filler.

I hate styrofoam packing peanuts!!! Do not use them Hint Hint…

That’s how I packed my cars when I moved, and it works well. Plus the box keeps any parts that may fall off with the car, and not in the bottom of the packing crate.

Dear Cody,

I am one of the few modelers who model 1895. I am having a little trouble in locating some Horse drawn Carriages or primitive automobiles from that era; could you recommend any?

Thanks Cody

Great show! Could Kalmbach possibly make a contract with Apple to sell Laptop cases for Macbooks & Macbook Pros in the thing of Model Railroader magazine and other magazines published by Kalmbach? Thanks!

Hi Cody, I am interested in the EMDSD70 that you featured but was unable to find it on the website. I even went to MTH but with no luck. Can you direct me where I should go to find it?

Thanks a lot cody for the packing tip, i happen to be moving next month and have already packed my trains, via i used bubble wrap and have to change it . thanks

I moved in 2000 and used lots of paper towels. I just unpacked some cars last week to start detailing them and they were just like the day I packed them. Rule of thumb…plastic against plastic is never good. Great program, but why is the window sade closed all the time now?

great show cody!

Do you know if there if Atlas still sells the C-424 Or C-420 model In The Apache Railway?

OK, Cody, I love what you do. BUT, packing a car in its own (original?) box with paper towels? The paper towels are a great idea. But the box? Modelers have three serious constraints (in no particular order) time, money, and space. Where do you find the space to keep enough boxes for each and everything that needs to be repacked?

Great segment Cody. Lots of useful tips and product information.

The best use for the packing peanuts, if they are not the water soluable type, is to mix them with planter soil for your annual flower planters. They reduce the weight of the planter and the amount of soil required to fill the planter. Throw in a couple empty pop cans and they will hold some water. Lay them on their side the roots will find any additional water trapped in the cans.
I know the last is not model railroading but it saves money to spend on the trains.

Cody, couldnt you wash that freight car with soap, like dish soap and water to remove those imprints from the bubble wrap?

Good advice on packing. Moving twice in a year, I used larger boxes and packed the same way, stacking layers with cardboard, and then the paper towels to block them in . Minimal damage. I now have a new tune up time for the ones that did get damaged too.
Nice audience sound effects on the end!
Thanks again for a good episode. Dan

I agree with Eric Hall 100% - I hate styrofoam packing peanuts!!! Does anyone have any tips on re-using them for something constructive? I throw away trash bags full just from the N scale stuff I buy. End of rant. Another great show Cody, and thanks for the packing tip!

Thanks for the timely tip Cody . I’m storing my rolling stock while constructing an N layout . Will be doing some repacking .
(Off subject) Being a small space railroader, more N tips and layout reviews would sure help.

I put all my styrofoam peanuts in paper grocery bags and when I get several I take them to the local UPS store, which gratefully accepts them for re-use.
