Modeler’s Spotlight Video – Inside Cody’s Office for September 2014

Great show. Very good tip on handrails, try it on N Scale, even more fun and yes, doable For those interested in snowplows, check the various video distributors. I believe there are a few snow plow videos out there.

Hi Cody,

I have a quite sizable N scale layout that is completely DC, but I’m thinking of converting everything to DCC. Is there a way that I can operate both DC and DCC locomotives together during this transition period?

Michael

Great modeling tips on installing grab irons Cody, they really spice up older engines. Also liked the snowplow operation explanation, but wouldn’t they have been using a single-wing snowplow for a double track setup like the MR&T? Double winged plows are usually used on single tracks aren’t they?

For installing grab irons and other small wire parts, I find I get better results using the smallest drill bits in a slowly turning motor tool instead of a pin vise. The motor turns the bit more steadily than most of us can do by hand. It also helps to use a sewing needle in a pin vise to punch the molded dimples a little deeper, so the drill bit has a better defined starting point.

Nice video. Thanks for the tip on the Oxford cars - they look nice on the screen.

Hi Cody.
I enjoyed you 3 part series on Keller Brewery. I was wondering if there should be some overhead piping from the sugar and corn syrup facilities to the main building. How does the product get to the brewery building. This would also add more visual interest and tie the buildings together as one facility.

Cody,

Why didn’t you do an episode of Cody’s Office for August?

Regarding grab iron insertion, I find it easier to trim one leg slightly shorter, leaving the other full length. The longer leg is inserted providing an anchor to insert the other leg, easing insertion, without having to insert both legs simultaneously. After the glue has dried I trim the inside length with a flush cutting wire cutter.

Cody, I noticed that from January '14 to September of '14. (Hard copy magazine) you’ve switched from using Model Master’s clear Acryls on your MR&T to same brand’s Lusterless Topcoat in part 3/brewery project. Why the change and what’s the diff? Do you prefer one topcoat over the other? Jim

Cody, You guys were at the National Train show in Cleveland, Ohio in August, that is why there was no Codys’s office per say. They did however cover the national show in a two part video. Which all subscribers should be able to pull up. If you do pull it up, it was a great production from the MR staff, very enjoyable coverage alot of new upcoming products, great layouts as well. Watch, or look for it you will be amazed. The oxford models are graet and resonably priced as well. The New GP39x…Geep is a nice model as well. Untill next month, happy railroading to all.

P.S. Why doesnt the national train show come to DFW area sometime, we would love to host it in the lonstar state, great state of Texas.

Cody, Regarding grab irons:: Some rolling stock and many locos come with a plastic bag with grab irons and other separately applied hardware. Question is how does one know where to install these parts. Diagram doesn’t show these items???

Hi Cody, I was wondering about the Freight Crate carrying case from Fast Tracks and the bubble wrap. One of your videos you recommend not using bubble wrap for storage. Is it better to use paper towels or will the bubble wrap work in this case? Thanks, Joe from FL.

Cody, just wondering if it wouldn’t be easier when installing grab irons on a locomotive to cut after installation and glue drying. I would also recommend using something other than your hand(s) to hold the body while drilling.
Have to say that the air horn sound was mighty weak, and probably not a 5-chime horn.

Cody, regarding the question about the Russell Snow Plow; DishTV, Channel 231 (RFDTV) has a weekly show “Trains and Locomotives”; episode 309, dated 12/16/2013, had a program about CN & CP snow plow runs in 1988; also a fantastic snow plow wreck. If you have Dish, as the saying goes, “check your local listings for time”; my DVR is set to record all episodes, which will pick up duplicates, but you can delete them…check it out…

Hello, Athearn. LEDs, please! And thank you.

Cody, Who makes the yellow pin vise you were using to install the grab irons. It’s about time to replace mine.

Hi Cody, I noticed in your modeling tip you are using a really nice looking pin vice. I have never seen one live that before. What brand is it?

Cody, I have enjoyed all the helpful tips and painting tips especially. I live in SC and near us is the Stumphouse tunnel. This rail line was never completed do to the civil war. Materials and men to work construction was also in short supply. I have been attempting to make a model of this never completed train line but have found nothing. Can you point me a direction for more information?

Great to see that Cody ran that Southern Geep long hood forward
