Modeling a Short Line with Witch's Hat Passenger Stations... Need Help!?

Hey, I am modeling the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad, and they have two stations that have what is called a “Witch’s Hat” due to the shape of the roof. Does anyone know if a kit, or plans, are available for this type of station?

Here is a few photo’s of the station in New Hope:

Well, Crown River Products model of MEC’s Crawford Notch station is similar.

Thanks for the link to the model! I’ve saved it, and now am trying to figure out if I can modify the structure to fit my needs. Thanks again.

Well the top is just a cone with straight sides and that shouldn’t be too hard to construct. I would then build up the bottom with plastic filler putty or plaster sanded to shape. If you have access to a lathe you turn one from plastic or wood also

Thanks for the tip on plastic filler putty and plaster, I honestly wouldn’t have thought of that. Unfortunately I do not currently have access to a lathe, I have heard that Harbour Freight has some good deals on power tools… will be looking at those in the near future.

I’m keeping the search going for a model/kit that may be available a little closer to the prototype.

Thanks again for the help guys!

Well if you have a drill press or hand drill that should be adequate for the project. Just drill a hole in the base of the tower before assembly and put a long screw through the hole from the inside and a washer and nut on the bottom. Then you can chuck that in the jaws of either one and spin it while you smooth the profile. Take the nut and washer off when done and let the screw fall into the tower.

It may be out of print, BRIDGES & BUILDINGS for model railroads (Kalmbach) has a article of a station with a cone roof. The article explains how to build this roof using flat triangular panels. It becomes round when it,s wrapped with shingles.

Thanks! I’ll have to look for it! Much appreciated!
