I was wondering what loco’s were in use in the mid 80’s, mostly SF, BN, and BNSF. I know that about '84 (correct me if I am wrong) Bn merged with SF creatiing BNSF. What loco’s would you find on the rails around 1988? Would there be any BNSF SD 70’s for example? Thanks Mike
No BNSF did not exist then. Santa Fe was still a separate railroad. I don’t know when the Burlington Route and Great Northern merger happened, but if you just to a little bit of Googling you can perform your own research.
BNSF wasn’t formed until around 1995.
For the 1980’s, this might help. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_GM-EMD_locomotives
and this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_GE_locomotives
Hope this helps.
BN formed in 1970.
Man I was way off! I am modeling SF, BN, BNSF so lets say what loco’s would see on the rails in 1998? Thanks for straightening me out, I need that sometimes. Mike
look here this site has build dates on it http://archive.trainpix.com/BNSF/ROSTER.HTM
A lot of the same ones you see now, only newer and cleaner. [swg]
By 1998 you’d see SD-70MACs (BN had some in executive paint before the merger with SF). C-44-9Ws must have been around for a few years by then, because CNW had some and they folded into UP in 1995 IIRC. There were a lot of SD-40-2s and GP-38s bought in the seventies and they’d be in service.
AFAIK BNSF high-nose SD-9’s still are doing yard work in some areas, so you would see them then too, probably still in BN paint. In fact, I think the GN-retro green and orange was just starting then, so most engines would either still be in BN or ATSF colors and lettering.
You could search out a few other oldies…CP Rail / Soo still had high-nose GPs in service, and up in northeast Minnesota Erie Mining Co./LTV Steel was still running A-B-B-B-A sets of F9s.
BTW the BN merger was March 1970. Technically it was primarily Great Northern + Northern Pacific. The Burlington Route and SP&S were both jointly owned by GN and NP.
