modeling louvers on f7 a unit

i have not the money for a brass model, so I would like to super detail one the I have laying around. i know what i want to do for the vast majority of it, but i do not know how to model the louvered vents that you can see through on the prototype.

Daveo,

If you can, please look into Archer Fine Decals, they have Resin set decals that are in a Louvered pattern in many scales, I have used them to place vents in various items.
They may seem costly for a small sheet, but they go a long way (good quantity)…
When applied & painted well, they look as good or factory, or I would not use them regulary.

I searched my own photo site & I do not have a shot of them on there, so Hold On, & I will make you a photo of some on the sheet & under the paint.

It may be worth a look, keep your options open…
Stay tuned!

Okay, so here it is!
I have one major correction, as I mis-spoke, they are called Archer Fine Transfers…

They are nice, they also offer treadplate, anti skid, & sensational rivet sets!!

Here is the (now to be known as the illusive) HO ‘Athearn GP40X’ with a Louvered (Canadian Styled) Air Compressor vented louvered tail, for more fresh air intake, etc…

The only thing I do not like about these, is that they can break apart if severely mishandled, & also since they are Resin printed they are not solid silky shiny smooth…
However, (a big However) I could not do this in HO myself, so I will use these each & every time, & they will improve them every day.

I took the shot the way I did so you can see the stock numbers on each sheet , I hope that helps you out, the HO ‘GP40X’ should gauge the size as well. The ones used on that unit are the nearest sheet. (AR88038).
Thanks, & I wish you the best of Luck!
Chad

{PS: The missing Grab Irons are for the future Decal stripes, as I think ahead!}

Chad,

Thank you for bringing up this helpful information. [Y][8D]

I’m going to be modeling a pair of Atlantic Coast Line E7s (one ACL, one ex-ACL in the SCL scheme). One of their spotting features was the extra louvers the railroad installed on the carbodies to allow additional cooling for the 567 powerplants due to the southeastern U.S’s high humid heat conditions during the June-August period.
