What is the best way to install belt from pulleys to equipment? What materials should be used and what color should the belt be?

I used thin strips of masking tape, colored it brown with a felt pen. I’ve seen better ways to do it, but don’t remember much, pehaps it was Mylar tape. Anyway some shots of my machine shop interior are on my website on this page:
