Modeling Metal Roofs

I need to scratchbuild a gabled roof as part of an engine house kitbash project just begun. I’d like it to be a metal roof, either a corrugated or standing seam look. What’s a good method to model that without purchasing a bunch of commercial products? I’ve tried embossing aluminum foil by laying it on a soft surface and rolling a piece of allthread over it, but results thus far have been less than satisfactory.

Take a block of smooth wood and lay lengths of solid copper or other wire across it spaced out according to your scale.

Use heavy duty aluminum foil and gentle impress the wire into the foil with a soft cloth. The wire allows for aligning the next section.

My LHS had a great metal standing seam roof in platic that cost about $3.00. It was easy and looks real good.

Hello I used a piece of styrene that look like the standing seam roofing from a old kit. I took the heavy foil and laid it over the styrene and press from one side to the other. It look ok. But I think I’ll try the block of wood and wire to see what it looks like. Hope this helps Frank

evergreen scale models makes standing seam roofing in 6" x 12" sheets. The sheets are grooved and you glue in the supplied thin strips.
