I am planning on modeling nebraska in my latest layout. What road names other than UP run through the Omaha, Nebraska area?
CB&Q (Burlington Route). Later merged into Burlintgton Northern. Later merged into BNSF.
the word “through” limits the number considerably. also what year are we talking about?
grizlump
As noted, CB&Q (my line of choice) which became BN then BNSF
Missouri Pacific in the eastern parts which became UP
Rock Island, mostly abandoned
Chicago & North Western to UP
If you throw in our sister city across the river, Council Bluffs, the railroads magnify
Wabash, later Norfolk and Western, abandoned
Illinois Central, later Chicago Central and Pacific back to IC and Canadian National
Milwaukee Road
Chicago Great Western
Iowa Interestate (former Rock Island in Iowa)
Have to consult my notes as I know I’m missing a couple

Today, modern era, BNSF and Canadian National (ex IC). Both use the UP’s Missouri River bridge to some extent. Amtrak also runs through on the BNSF. If you throw in Council Bluffs, IA you could include the Iowa Interstate. It’s not an everday happening, but once in a while an IAIS engine will make it over the bridge too. I think the Brandon Railroad, a switching line, is still on the south side.
There are also Kansas City Southern grain trains on both UP and BNSF to a couple of Co Bluffs elevators. These are haulage rights trains. The trains have KCS engines and cars, but the crews are either UP or BNSF. The KCS rights on the UP I think originally belonged to the MKT (Katy) as a condition of UP taking control of the MP. When UP acquired the MKT, the rights then went to KCS.
Now, if you go back about 30 (or more in some cases) years, you could have in the Omaha/Co Bluffs area: Chicago and North Western (including the Omaha Road), Rock Island, Milwaukee Road, Missouri Pacific, Norfolk and Western (Wabash), Illinois Central and Chicago Great Western (which went into CNW) and of course Burlington Northern/Burlington Route. Many of those lines also used the UP bridge to access Omaha Union Station and/or their respective freight trackage in Omaha.
