I can’t answer your questions but am very intersted. Are you currently modeling the Kyle or planning to? The Kyle got the old Rock Island line east of Limon Colorado. I drive by / along it all the time.
yeah i have a few hoppers patched and i am currently working on a u30c atlas ho scale master locomotive with the kyle patch over the bn.
I painted a few for my Godson, whose name is Kyle, about 9 years ago. Microscale is the only producer of decals for Kyle as far as I know.
A chimpanzee could do the paint scheme. If I remember, I used Conrail Blue and Dark Blue from Floquil in some mixture. It was probably 50/50, but the mixture is not an exact science. The entire loco gets painted blue and the white will come from the decals.
I haven’t seen a roster for them in a few years, but they were rich with C30-7s back around 2000. I think they had a lot of U-boats before that.
I have seen at least three Kyle Railroad schemes (also used on railroads that Kyle Railways owned). One is about half (if not more) of the sides white with dark blue above and below the white. The second is mainly dark blue with a white stripe coming off of the KYLE. The Third is a medium blue with the bottom about 1/3 of the locomotive above the walkway white and a red stripe between the two. To get be better idea of what these schemes look like, have a look at some photographs.
I believe the white and blue was the original paint scheme used on their original Geeps, which were either 7s or 9s. The red, white and blue is probably the most current scheme since they are owned by RailAmerica, which can be found at http://www.railamerica.com.
I don’t remember which U-boats they had, but taking some creative license and calling them U30Cs for now, they would have been in the all blue scheme.
Microscale may make RailAmerica decals, but unless it has been very recently, the only Kyle ones they make are based on the first two paint schemes.
the u30c’s were ex burlington northern units with a kyle patch under the cab
Kyle owns several railroads throughout the country, including the Arizona Eastern and the former San Pedo and Southwestern. The paint scheme on their two Arizona roads was different, so they may not have a standard color scheme that they use.
I was looking at the paint schemes that run in Kansas since i am a kansas dude.
Kyle Railways (which owned Kyle Railroad along with several other railroads) sold out to States Rail in 1997. States Rail was bought out by Rail America in 2002. RA sold off SP&SW a couple of years ago.
San Joaquin Valley Railroad, the former Kyle Railways railroad closest to me, still has no locomotives painted in Rail America paint. They have all three Kyle schemes, RailTex, Park Sierra, and three CEFX (or former CEFX) locomotives in light gray and maroon.
Here are the paint schemes in the order I listed them in my first post.

The Microscale decals cover the first two schemes Eric shows. The third would be easy enough to do with them and some red stripes.
Maybe its just me, but I think railroads like Kyle model pretty well. Power is generally second or third hand, meaning about any motive power except the very newest is plausible. I’d suspect there is a lot of road switching going on, making them interesting from an operating perspective. Sort of an “in the trenches” railroad.
The paint job on that SW8 looks fairly pristine.
I think its kinda nice to someone modeling a shortline like the Kyle. I like the scheme on the GP28 the had/have?
I always thought the Hollis & Eastern begged to be modeled
Kyle used to have at least three GP28s, as that many have come to SJVR from Kyle (1825, 1826 and 1829). All are now lettered for SJVR except for 1829. Kyle might still have 1827 and 1828.
