Models by subscription?

Been thinking about his one as along with many others I’d love HO scale sets of Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner and California cars.

I know that over this side of the pond , some European manufacturers will only produce the models when a set number of orders are recieved , obviously this covers the cost of tooling etc .

Does anybody think that this idea would work to get Walthers , or any other US manufacturer to produce these cars?

If they were to produce a set of 3 or 4 cars (Cab , Coach , Cafe , Business) , then sell the add-on cars I wonder what sort of numbers they’d need to make this happen?

Thoughts on this subject most welcome…

Cheers

Rich

Walthers did this several years ago with their “theme” kits - steel mill, logging/lumber mill, etc. Subscribe and you’d get say $600.00 worth of items for $500.00 (just guessing at the amounts, I really don’t have an idea!). They didn’t repeat it, so that might tell you something.

Hawthorne Village does this with On30 trains. Basically you’re buying a On30 train set for list price. Not my taste but then they have a lot of sets to choose from.

Enjoy

Isnt BLI and others doing this already with their production gauges? They have a meter that tells you how many pre-orders have been recieved and how many are needed for production to begin.
