Modern car float ops ?

For all you car float fans out there check out these coordinates on Google Earth;

LAT 40°39’3.86"N, LON 74° 1’16.40"W

LAT 40°38’38.00"N, LON 74° 1’56.59"W

LAT 40°40’44.42"N, LON 74° 4’25.52"W

These are all located in and around NYC and cross the Hudson River south of Manhattan. Look back in the historical photos of these spots and you can see floats getting loaded/unloaded in 2006. I didn’t know they still operated at this point.

Not only were NY harbor float operations happening in 2006, they (now NYNJ, under Port Authority of NY&NJ aegis) are operating nowadays too - here’s a June 2011 YouTube video of a car float loaded w/ tank-cars being docked and unloaded.

The whole operation is being revamped over the past few years, new trackage on 1st Street in Brooklyn, new yard connections, etc - maybe they’ll even float out of 65th st yard one day (instead of 50th St) 65th St yard was rebuilt by the City a few decades ago, with state of the art float facilities - for 1989 - and really hasn’t been used yet (it was too expensive for then float operator NY Cross Harbor/NY RR)

Sometimes the float operations don’t always work smoothly

There’s a car float that still operates across the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, too, between Port Charles and Norfolk, Va. Still uses the old PRR barge, too.
