I don’t know if it is just me or not, but I am sure having a hard time finding modern buildings and scenic details such as vehicles in N Scale. Almost everything seems to be for between 1950 and the late 70’s. Vehicles are mostly in the 50’s and 60’s.
Are there any sites that are a good reference to find stuff?
I am interested in the answer to this question as well. I’m VERY early in the planning stages, but I’m pretty sure I will be going with modern N scale.
On my mid to late 1990’s N- Scale layout I have the Kato 1990’s Japanese Toyota cars. Also I have ones made by Atlas that include Ford Explorers and Ford Taurus’s.
I’ve been modeling modern era in N scale for about 12 years. I’ve learned that you can find these items if you watch for them patiently over time. Unfortunately there is not a glut of them like in HO where you can just go to the hobby store and pick up everything you need in one trip. There are a lot of European vehicles available (Mercedes, VW etc.) from European manufacturers that will pass for American cars. Atlas makes some modern vehicles, but again you have to watch for them over time. Kato also make some Japaneese models (Toyota, Nissan). As for structures, off-the-beaten-path companies make some. You will see them advertised in MR adds from time to time. Example: I recently saw an add in MR for a small manufacturer of N scale skyscrapers that look really good. It’s called Model Art and you can reach them by email at jim_archinet@yahoo.com. In short, they are out there, but they take more dilligence to find than in HO scale. Then again I find the search to be part of the charm of modeling in N scale–not everyone will agree with that. Hope this helps.
I’m just finding this out now, as I move to the town building and then the street filling buying stage for my layout. I don’t really want to build GHQ kits etc, but I probably will if I want a police or sheriffs dept cruiser or the local volunteer Fire fighters (always wanted a Fire house!)
Jim Wills has some modern vehcles if you don’t mind solid cast resin, and I can vouch for his quality.Jim has a Ebay store but once your connected I believe he would willingly sell dirrect.
