Modernizing locomotives and thinking at CSX

It would be an interesting comparison to have the CSX “Crashworthy Cab” and NS’s “Admiral Cab” rated for such as Crew Comfort, Environment ( Air Conditioned and/or Heating systems ). What do the crews having to live with these workplace enhancements really think about them?

About time to realize that good maintenance is cost effective.

Lets call these programs what they really are…avoiding tier 4 locomotives as muchas possible, especially since all US railroads are limited to one supplier for at least a little while longer. Much like the glider kits being sold in the trucking industry, as long as the engine block has the old serial number it can stay at the old emissions level.

I agree with Dennis. From what I’ve read, it seems that there are still a number of unknowns about the reliability of the technology that will have to be answered in the day-to-day operating environment. I’m reminded of the mid-1970’s when emissions controls were introduced on American automobiles - the motors became less reliable and the cost of repairs went up.

Interesting that no GEs are being rebuilt.

ugliest cabs since the early MK rebuilds !
