Can someone send me pictures of the Modesto Empire Traction area from GalloWines through the industrial district including the area around the huge warehouse buildings all the way to the container loading yard. Pictures in and around the engine work shop are also needed. I lived in Modesto during the 80s and preside in Stockholm, Sweden now.
We have a large modul club and I´m now building moduls of 9th st during the 80s and the industrial district.
Modesto and Empire Traction has the best website I know of in terms of its usefulness to modelers. There are a lot of photos, plus a map of the Baird Industrial Park where Gallo is located. Go to <metrr.com>
I have seen a lot of photos of the engine house lately because they are replacing their 70-ton switchers. I don’t recall at which websites, but others will know. Try TrainOrders or TrainFoamers for starters.
This month’s issue of Trains (April 2009) on the top of page 24 has a half-page photo of one end of the M&ET’s Modesto enginehouse, showing 1 of the new RailPower gensets, 3 of the GE 70-tonners, and 2 EMD SW1500s, with a little bit of background - credited to Shane Roberson. The article - titled “Gensets Sideline 70-Tonners”, by David Lustig - is the rest of that page.
You might also try the RailPictures.Net website - its search/ filter tool can be pretty handy for that.
Also, try MicroSoft’s “LiveEarth” application, which provides aerial and bird’s-eye views. I get to it (primitively) through the “Penn Pilot” home page, at:
Although that page starts out as centered on my home state of Pennsylvania, you can then drag or scroll to anyplace in the U.S., including California. I just tried that, and the M&ET enginehouse at 641 S. McClure Rd. (where Leckron Road intersects with McClure) shows up just fine - all 4 sides of it, even, if you “rotate” the “Bird’s Eye View” around it.
