Modular layout books?

Well i just got done wiring the train room for lights and things are progressing nicly and my wife hits me with “I think i would like a divorce”. Well this has been a while in coming so it wasnt much of a shock. In fact i was planning for 2 1/2 years from now but if this is how it goes than so be it. Since i don’t want my modeling to stop i decided that if i ahve to get a appartment for a year due to this then i would like to construct a nice modular layout. Mostly so i can run trains (they make me happy LOL LOL) but also i can put my skills to work on small scenes to keep me busy.

Is there any good books or websites out there with good construction tips for modular layouts?

Thanks everyone.

Bill

Well Modular is simply a section of … 2x4 foot or 2x6 feet etc.

I encourage you and the wife to take each problem that bothers both of you and hammer it all out with no secrets involved. If you two cannot reach agreement… well I guess best wishes and good luck.

Apartment living is going to mean small layouts and possibly a greater reliance on a local club for the room to let the big stuff stretch legs and run.

The Model Railroading Handbook, Vol. III by Robert Schlelcher, devotes about half the book to working with modules.

I picked up the set on eBay, but you could probably get it through inter-library loan.

Wow. Been there, done that. You suppose it was the layout that broke the camel’s back? Sorry, I shouldn’t joke about such things. Take heart though - you will survive.

I now live in a townhouse with an unfinished basement. Since I’m not inclined to finish it right now, I am doing modular on 2-inch thick foam. I am debating a couple of different locations, one that would use cheap shelf brackets and one that would just have the mods on folding banquet tables with pipe for leg extensions to raise the height. The tables would certainly work in an apartment and could be used for other things.

I’ve always liked the David Barrow articles in MR and Layout Planning. There are also modular discussion groups on trainboard.com and such.
