A year ago there was a nasty crash of two trains occupying the same crossing at Momence Il. There was some discussion on this forum about the accident but nothing was stated as to the cause of the accident.
Any word yet on the cause of the derailmnet? Has the report been issued?

It is a whole bunch of thread responses about the UP/NS crossing at Momence, Il. and if memory serves me correctly, I think that there were Two t- Bone type meets at the same crossing within about a year or two, as traffic was increased across that diamond. I think it all was around the RR’s not wanting the expense of an automated crossing system[ or something like that].

The Thanksgiving day crash of 2005 was the result of a UP train running a red signal and hitting the NS train. There was another accident at this same crossing in either 1999 or 2000. That time a NS train ran a red signal in front of a UP train and it was struck by the UP train. Momence used to have a tower, Pence tower. It was retired in the mid 90’s and the interlocking became a manual interlocking controlled by one of the dispatchers. I can’t remember if it was the UP or CR, now NS dispatcher that controlled it though.
