Momentum builds for Pullman historic site

I like this. A very important part of American history.

Pullman is in a part of Chicago that no one wants to go in except the people that have to live there. I predict it will be a money losing ghost town. National Park? Ha!

I guess Dennis you’ve only rode by it on the Bishop Ford Expressway or Amtrak or Metra Electric then. I live in Chicago and have friends who live in the Pullman neighborhood because they want to. Because it’s a singularly unique and vibrant neighborhood. It does lack walkable amenities, but quite possibly due to uninformed impressions such as yours. I recommend detaching from media portrayals of places like this and visiting for yourself to form your own impressions, as I have.

I feel certain that the designation will be National Historic Site, or National Monument. Very few urban sites get the highest designation, even though the managing agency is the National Park Service. Still, the history is worth preserving.

A long overdue recognition of the obvious historical importance of Pullman of not only to Chicago but nationally… As a planned community and a “company town” it has many interesting stories to tell.

Fully in agreement with Paul. I visited the area a few years ago and found a charming neighborhood. The site should be preserved and re-stored for its historical importance.

I made the trip down there last summer. It would be wonderful to see the site restored and for the public to be able to access this part of history. And for the record, I found the neighbourhood to be charming.

I admit that I haven’t been down there in quite a few years but I still know how to read a newspaper. You won’t catch me walking around there.

It’s Durbin, not Durban (that’s a city in South Africa). Proofreading, people.

It sounds like a good idea. I do hope that it does come to fruition.

If it has a market value, then private investment…not taxpayer dollars…is the only moral solution to Pullman history.

This absolutely needs to happen. No question.
