money cards and modeliing

Hi all

With the profusion of bank, credit, membership and gift cards around these days.

All basicaly being of similar size and type and made of plastic.

Has any one thought of using the trade names logo’s etc on dead or used ones as model business signage even better if the magnet strip has to be cut to get the bit you would use.

regards John

I cut up a couple, last year when wife and I got our new ones from the bank, but just for some angles to reinforce some wall joints in a structure I was building.

For me, the logo idea doesn’t work, all the logos are way too modern.

Same for me and probably many others, too modern. I model 1970’s and 1980’s thru end of cabooses.

great idea!

I never thought of we can use them to reinforce wall joints in a structure

Call me silly but I cut up old credit cards.

Many merchants take gift cards when empty and recylce or reuse them. I much prefer that than having more laying around. They have no value on my layout either since I model the early 1980s.

Neat idea but I, too, wouldn’t find it very useful modeling the early 40s.

I keep a few around and use them for spreading plaster, Durham’s Putty and such. Sometimes I need a shape to get a contour or to get the putty into odd-shaped crevices. Easy to trim to shape then toss it when done.

I’ll also trim them into custom widths for scraping individual lettering on locomotives and rolling stock after soaking in your favorite softening solution. If you need a “non-aggressive” scraper they are perfect for that.

Have Fun! Ed

The idea of credit cards as scrap material should also include the fake cards you get in the offers from various cards that want your business. There are also some now that aren’t plastic, but a very dense cardboard. I also save them to use as spreaders with glue, etc.
