If they don’t blow correctly they could get pulled from service? That seems harsh. No matter how they blow the horn, they’re still warning people that the train is coming. I don’t think it should be about having a certain whistle code, I think it should be about warning people that a train is coming.
Willy - it is an infraction of the rules. However, if they pulled everyone out of service who didn’t follow all the rules to the letter, you and I would have to help Ed run the railroads.
Willy,
It really depends on who catches you, and what they cacth you doing, or not doing.
f you have a trainmaster on you tail, not blowing correctly is a excuse to pull you out of service, after all, there is a real reason for the horn blowing, and the codes used are old, been around for a long time.
Every motorist in North America knows the tune engineers blow at crossings, and if the engineer fail to use it, and an accident occurs, that alone would be enough to sway a jury in a courtroom.
That said, of course we all “fail” to follow every rule all the time.
I pull pins with my foot every day, I get on and off moving equipment incorrectly every once in a while, and on occasion(big wink here) some of us do take naps on duty.
If they pulled us all out of service for every small rule infraction, there would be no one left to run the trains.
For the most part, management will turn a blind eye to such small infractions, (as long as the work gets done, and done quickly,) right up until something goes wrong, then you get charged with every little thing they can find, to apply as much pressure to you as possible.
Thats one of the parts of railroading you never hear about or read about in books and magazines.
If i’n not mistakesen, every RR emplyee for a Canadian Railroad has to be a Conductor before they can be an engineer.
Never, ever have i seen thm hire Engineers only, and in my mind, it seems to be a stupid practice…
why hire someone new when you can promote a conductor and replace that Job?
I agree Ed, You can’t follow all of the rules all of the time, I know so little of the ones that are supposed to go on inside of the train, I dson’t think were allowed uhhh… “company”… in the control cab… but what the hell…
I’m going to look that up, I doubt we can hire Engineers direct, and If they can, i’ll be a moneky uncle.
Some rules are just stupid… like traveliing with all the doors closed… why close them when you can have them open?
closing them eliminates the chances of people killing themselves…
<<<<<REALLY BIG WINK THERE!!!>>>>>>>****************
Kevin where you joking?
Uhh Yes, I do belive it was a joke!
Growing up in the 70s, engineers I spoke to started as brakemen and with “smarts” and seniority became firemen, then on to engineers. Conductors also started as brakemen/switchmen and climbed that ladder. The conductor and engineer career ladders were basically two crafts that didn’t “interlock” careerwise. Times really have changed!
I hope that the Class 1s continue to keep at least two people in the locomoitve cab!
Ok - I must confess. Mookie gets special dispensation! Driver said Mookie has been driving from the right seat and the back seat for so many years, she gets to be an engineer without being a conductor.
There would also have to be some changes to the locomotive. It must come with a radio tuned to the oldies rock and roll and turned up pretty loud. Gotta open the window and scrooch down in the seat a little, put on cool sunglasses and rod on down the tracks!
