In “43 Track Plans From The Experts”, the Moraga Springs Northern has a couple of apparently erroneous track elevation figures. In one case, it goes from 52 inches to 50 inches in less than 2 feet! In another case there’s a 45 inch elevation shown that would represent a tremendous dip from adjacent elevations. Is there a source for the correct elevations, or the correct locations for the apparently erroneous elevation tags?
Hi BF&D,
It seems to me it are errors.
With a 3% grade it will be possible to climb 3" from Forbes up to the bridge just left of the mill. Though the vertical easement will have to start on or just before the crossing with Millstreet. The turnout, just at the right of the access hatch, should not be on the easement. From there you’ll have a steady 3% climb up to Freeport; maybe even a tad steeper. For more modern equipment 4" of clearance would be a better option. On the MSN probably 3" would do perfectly. It’s quite possible the bridge is also still on the incline. The space between the bridge and Freemont station is probably enough for easing the grade.
The elevation of 45" is another riddle or typo.
Mailing to the editor or to Don Ball directly (you might be able to google his mail-address) could help you further.
