More Modeling Help

Does anyone have a good idea as to HO decal set(s) that I could use to redecal a wreck crane to make it fit into a Milwaukee (CMStP&P) yard? Also a good yellow to use to repaint said crane would also be helpful. (Brush paintable, water-base would be nice but not imperative.) As usual, any help that the forums can provide would be welcomed.

Do you have pictures of a particular crane?

As MOW equipment most railroads do not use decals or fancy heralds on their equipment. Blac, Brown, Gray, or Yellow paint will usually sufice. Just use any lettering font you like to use dry transfer, or as the LION does, just print out a nice lettering set on a clear lable and stick it on the equipment. It is MOW equipment, the lettering does not even need to be straight.

Like Lion said, keep it simple . . . . MOW equipment is pretty basic.

MOW

I use Railroad Roman font for my MOW fleet.

As to the picture question, I don’t have any photo references. This is for a diorama that I am working on for our local museum. It has some donated equipment that doesn’t have the correct roadnames for the road depicted. I would like to use as much of the equipment that is already there, which will require some repainting and decaling. That would be nothing new as I paint my own equipment anyway.

Don’t assume. Research. The Morning Sun book “Milwaukee Road Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment Volume 1” by Nighswonder and Stauss has photos of Milwaukee Road MOW equipment.

Some Milwaukee Road cranes were yellow with the red herald; some lacked the herald. Some were yellow with yellow frames; some were yellow with black frames. Some were black but also had the herald. One locomotive crane is yellow with a red stripe like a passenger car, black frame, and had the old “Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul & Pacific” herald! Pretty darn fancy.

A variety of type fonts is also seen on the lettering, and some have the phrase “Hard Hat Area”
