Are these questions too simple because I need a quick lesson on turnouts/radius. I’ve looked quickly in a couple of books but didn’t find the answers. What are the most common HO switches like 4,6 etc and what are their radii?(great word!) Are they readily available? I like the long curves rather than short, tight ones.

Is code 100 track preferred more than code 83? Is there any difference other than height?

Thanks

Turnouts with a specified number do not have a radius; their diverging route is straight. The number refers to how ‘sharp’ the angle of divergence is–#4 is very tight, #10 and #12 are much gentler. You can find turnouts made in most of these angles.

The Snap-switch variety of turnouts is different (and has a curved diverging leg), generally designed for 18" radius.

Code 83 rail is smaller than code 100 and looks more realistic. It also tends to cost a bit more.
