More questions re: Floquil new formula

Now that Floquil consists of an enamel base and not lacquer, is it safe to use Testor’s Dullcote and/or Glosscote over a Floquil painted object? I was always told never to use lacquer over anything but other lacquer. Also, I just bought a spray can of Floquil Crystal-Cote. It’s lacquer, too, and says it’s “plastic-compatible”, but does not say anything about being enamel-compatible. Thoughts from those of you who certainly have kept up with formula changes better than have I?

Regards

Welcome to the forums.

Afraid I don’t have an answer for you, but I do have a suggestion. Paint a piece of scrap, when dry give it a coat of one of the coatings in question. You could do a scrap for each. Then let folks know the results.

Maybe with this back at the top for awhile someone who has done this recently will see it and post an answer.

Good luck,

Richard

If you just bought the Crystal Cote, it’s an enamel base, not lacquer. According to the MSDS, it’s 10% mineral spirits, 20% Acetone, and 10% naptha, thinners usually associated with enamels, especially with the acetone at such a low percentage. Acetone is only used in the spray version, not the brush on, and since it’s so volatile (evaporates quickly) most of it will vaporize before it hits the model. However, the test above is advisable if you can do that.

The MSDS’s are available on the Testors website. Just pull up the display page for the color in question and at the bottom of the page is the link for the MSDS.

Thanks to the thoughts from the previous two posters. I’ve started a test piece and will apply the Crystal Cote when it dries. New Floquil takes SO LONG to dry compared to the old lacquer formula. I just bought (last week) a spray can of Crystal Cote (with the new label) it still says it is lacquer.

You can use any type of paint over any other if the first coat is COMPLETELY dry. Theoretically, the solvent will have completely evaporated & only the pigment will remain. You do need to scuff up the surface if you want to paint flat over gloss. You can also use lacquer thinner to thin the new FLOQUIL. It will not harm plastic if you spray it w/ light coats. jerry
