More steam for Western Maryland Scenic?

If memory serves, there is a WM pacific on display in Hagerstown. Could this be restored to operation?

Why not a B&O mike? I am pretty sure I remember seeing one in Baltimore. Cumberland is home to the WM and B&O.

Every Steam Engine that can be restored should be. B&O Museum should be ashamed of what they let happen to this engine

The same reasons you or I don’t have one, room and money.

I think the 1306 fits the turntable and the railroad. My wife has never been east, so this Mallet might draw us. We have ridden behind the one on the Black Hills Central.

Engine 1309’s sister 1308 has been on display in Huntington, West Virginia, since 1962. Being very knowledgeable about these engines, this would be a good choice for the WMSR. As a 46 year NRHS member as well as the Collis P Huntington Chapter, NRHS, I was president of this organization when our attempts to operate this engine were fought by people who would rather see the engine rusting away rather than seeing it operate under its own power. If 1309 is successful in running again I will be there to ride it. Good luck to all involved.

why not a 2-6-6-6? ya know, the Alleghenys?

The slow speed of the Western Maryland Scenic with the steep grades makes perfect sense for a compound instead of a fast simple articulated.

Mr. Erena, I think the article meant that the two of them together have overhang.

Nice article- it would be great to see a “beast of the east” in steam again! One thing about the article: it states “The two GP30s fit with inches to spare and considerable overhang at the ends…” This is actually not correct. My daughter, 14 at the time, was allowed to turn GP-30 #502 with the conductor. My pictures of this clearly show the locomotive easily on the turntable. No inches or overhang at all! (By the way, as a dad and a railfan, watching my daughter spin the locomotive was one of the great thrills of my life!)

Nothing like an honest to goodness Mallet thundering up those grades. Western Maryland Scenic would be proud. That would be awesome!

Has anyone checked to see if C&O 614 might be made available? It seems to be a terrible waste to not use her if she could be…

Wow!!! I guess the WMS guys aren’t K.I.S.S (Keep it simple, stupid) believers like I am, especially when it comes to steam. That said, I wish them well and will be there for sure if they get her running.
