Man hit by train loses foot

Redding chemist in critical condition; officials investigate

A 27-year-old Redding man was in critical condition at a Redding hospital after being struck by a train early Friday.

Chris Rosemeyer lost a foot and suffered a broken leg, but remained conscious after being hit by the Union Pacific freight train at 2:15 a.m. near South and Oregon streets, Redding police Sgt. Jay Guterding said in a statement.

Rescue workers, who smelled alcohol on Rosemeyer’s breath, found him some 100 yards from the intersection, Guterding said.

A nursing supervisor at Mercy Medical Center in Redding said Rosemeyer’s condition hadn’t improved Friday afternoon.

Union Pacific spokesman James Barnes said an investigation into the incident is continuing and the train crew is receiving counseling. The 55-car train was traveling south en route from Portland, Ore., to Roseville.

He said he did not know at what speed the train was traveling or any other details about the crash.

“This could have been much, much worse,” Barnes said. “Many people in this type of incident do not survive.”

Rosemeyer, an analytical chemist in a Redding environmental lab, frequently comments on Redding.com stories and blogs.

He is often seen at area events, such as MarketFest, sporting a bushy beard, which he has said he grew as a joke.

Rosemeyer’s MySpace page said he graduated in 2004 from the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Fla., with a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology.

He’s a 1998 graduate of Fall River Junior-Senior High in McArthur.

Sailor hit by train now says it was an accident

Prospective SEALs candidate was walking too close to tracks

By Ralph Zahorik

Chicago Tribune

A sailor who lost his lower right arm after being hit by a commuter train Sunday in Lake Bluff was hoping to join the Navy’s elite SEAL forces.

The sailor, Seaman Brandon M. Garrison, 20, of Red Bluff, Calif., recently completed recruit training at Naval Station Great Lakes. He was waiting to start SEAL Candidates School at Great Lakes, said Matt Mogle, a spokesman for the center.

Garrison earlier said he had been attacked and pushed or pulled onto the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, but he later changed his story and acknowledged it was an accident, police said Tuesday.

“He was just scared,” said Lake Bluff Deputy Police Chief David Belmonte. “There was no indication that he was suicidal or anything. . . . It’s tragic.”

Garrison said he was walking too close to the tracks, about 30 feet from the McClory Bicycle Path, and was struck by the passing southbound train, Belmonte said. Police said Garrison had no drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of the accident.

The incident occurred after 7 p.m. Sunday in a relatively remote area about half a mile south of the Great Lakes Metra depot and the entrance gate to the base’s hospital.

Garrison was walking south along the bicycle path on the east side of the tracks, Belmonte said.

After the accident, Garrison used his tie as a tourniquet and walked the half-mile back to the hospital gate where he was treated and then flown to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Belmonte said.

Garrison’s arm was severed between his elbow and wrist.

Real Stupid, no second chance.

As reported on New Haven Channel 8 news this morning,

A man in Greenwich CT (an elite high income New York commuter town) was waiting for a train with his wife and three daughters. He left the platform to place a Penny on the track to show them how it would be flattened.

As the family was pulling him back on the platform, he was struck and killed by a Metro North Commuter Express running between Stamford and New York at 75 mph on this 4 track raceway.

I’m shure we will hear more in the next few days.

I bet they’ll sue the RR because they didn’t put up indicators that tell you when a train’s coming, or post guards on the platform, or something…[banghead]

Unfortunately, there is a whole class of people out there who CAN NOT be taught anything and will NEVER learn!!! [banghead]

Yes, they SHOULD know better.

Greenwich, CT is on the 4 track “Northeast Corridor”. The two center tracks are used by Amtak “Acela” Bullet Trains.

Why would we expect people to be any smarter near RR tracks than they are on the streets and highways? As Forrest Gump says, “Stupid is as stupid does.”

In line with that, last Saturday we had a fellow who couldn’t find a parking spot on the lot of a popular night spot, so he pulled across the street and parked next to the RR Tracks. A coal train came past and took his car with it. Luckily, no one was in the car.

Someone else once said “You can’t fix stupid” too.

You can try to prevent these kind of incident any way you can, but face it, there will always be someone out there stupid enough to race a train. Really it is impossible to get people to quit doing this, no matter how many more Operation Livesavers or safety programs by the railroads themselves come out.

We “lost” our runaround track a few weeks ago when someone nosed right up to it and parked their car there. Never did find out who it was.

A member of a local form has, as part of his sig, “Stupid should hurt, there would be less of it.”

The folks thus far mentioned certainly can attest to that. Now if we can just “share the wealth.”

I’ve heard it refered to as “stupidity and ignorance should be painful”.

Just push it out of the way![:-,]

Ishmael; THAT should teach him a lesson!

This is what the crew in India does.
