Interesting grain bin backdrop. How’d you do it?

Well, I went down to Emporia (8-10 miles south of here) and took several photos. Then I printed some test shots and held them up on the backdrop until I had several that I thought worked well.

I painted the backdrop complete with clouds.

At that time I printed off several shots on cardstock and glued one of them on a background of styrofoam sandwitched between sheets of paper (forget what you call it) and cut it out. The others I just placed on a real thick cardboard background and cut them out to get a different look and feel.

The trees were the same cardstock background. Notice that the cardstock is much heavier than standard cardstock.

Then I glued them all to the backdrop starting with the right side and moving to the left. The only thing that is one thickness of printed cardstock is the trees where I make a turn backward along the backdrop.

Basically, I took photos and selected the ones that I thought made a good backdrop and cut and glued them in place on various thickness of backgrounds after painting the backdrop complete with clouds.

Enough?

I, too, like the section of the backdrop with the storage bins. I WOULD like to see a picture of the backdrop from a head-on perspective.

Ok, but it isn’t very good.

Here’s a shot of the old town.

Roger,

I’d recognized the Galesburg RR Days poster hanging on the wall anywhere. Do you go back often??

What’s not very good about the head-on shot? That sandwich product you’re talking about; I think it’s probably, “Foamcore.”

I like the head-on shot too. Looks like it would make a very reailistic background if it’s mounted right. The old town looks good too. You need to get the street department out to work on the road striping though - looks like the crew had a little too much happy juice the day they striped Main St. [:)]

I just noticed the Kentucky Fried Chicken in Old Town. I see that your Colonel Sanders is missing from the cupola also. I kept knocking mine off and just gave up on it.

No, I’m afraid that I don’t get back to Galesburg and longer.

:frowning:

Foamcore? Ah, yes. That’s it.

Would you believe that I did the markings the night before a layout tour here. I have considerd redoing them.

Yes, that’s the kind of pressure that makes me do my best work too. [:)] Microscale sells double yellow stripe decals that look pretty good on my roads. You can use a straight edge and a fine tip black marker to mark the center line of the street and then lay the stripes so the middle between the two stipes is right on the black line. Mine came out reasonably straight.

Very good!

Unfortunately, I didn’t feel like I had a choice then. Now, yes!
