Which costs more money N scale or HO scale?

That depends on what you purchase, so there’s no true answer. That’s like the question about the chicken and the egg.

Depends on the kind of modelling and models you use. If you buy only Athearn blue box kits for locos and cars than HO will be cheaper. If you are going with all Atlas, Kato and Kadee locomotives and rolling stock then N-scale is more expensive.

If you take into consideration that with N-scale you will have more space and can run more trains or longer trains and have to buy more track… N-scale is more expensive.

At a per unit rate for non motorized things (not locos) N scale is cheaper. However, since you fit more N into the same space as HO, N scale could become more expensive. N scale is becoming cheaper, but decoder equipped engines in N are still much higher priced than Ho locos DCC equipped.

Given the relative market size for both product, N scale prices will be a lot higher than HO scale for the same item. Also, HO scale will likely have more options and features than N scale. For example, if you want some choices when it comes to sound, HO will dominate.

Item for item, I find N and HO just about the same. However, because you can fit more N into a given space, the total cost is likely to be higher.

N costs just as much as HO and sometimes more- Model HO it’s a better size/cost ratio

I don’t think in the long term there is much difference What you spend depends on what you want and what you can afford to spend…You can get started on the cheap in both and like wise the sky is the limit in both if you got it and want it…Cox 47

That was the final straw-that-broke-the-camels-back as to why I quit N-scale. I was noticing the same models by the same manufacturer (Atlas specifically at the time) and the HO was always less expensive. Then the HO Proto 2000 line really took off and further reduced HO prices.

N scale all the way!!!

Huh? From ads in this month’s MR (page 91)
Atlas N scale MP15C $67.49
Atlas HO scale MP15C $91.09

Intermountain N scale F3 $67.49
Intermountain HO scale F3 $74.99

There is not much difference in costs. It all depends on how big your layout is going to be and what you are going to fill it with. Comparatively there is a very slight price difference in engines and rolling stock between HO & N.
