What a wonderful story.
Mark in Texas
Yup a real “awwww” kind of tale. The closest I have come was rescuing a box turtle which somehow had climbed (or was placed) between the rails and could got escape back to the nearby wood. Because railroad tracks tend to be left alone they are actually pretty good places to see wildlife (and insects and wildfowers). One night I was train watching in total darkness (except for moon and starlight) and sitting on a big battery box cover waiting for a train. I looked down and near my feet was what looked to be a fancy kind of hat so I bent down to pick it up.
I was lucky.
It was the most forgiving skunk in the world.

I make it a personal rule to NEVER pick up a striped hat! Sounds like you were VERY lucky. Closest I’ve ever come was a “dead” possum that started moving. The lion cubs make me wonder how many critters don’t get saved.
